Job Description
Job Description
The CNC Operator will operate computer numerical control (CNC) machinery used in the fabrication of structural steel components for construction and related metal fabrication projects. This hands-on role combines precise CNC machine operation with general shop labor and occasional field installation work to support efficient production and high-quality output. The position requires at least 6 months of CNC experience in construction metal fabrication or related fabrication shops, strong measurement skills, reliable transportation, and the flexibility to work overtime and join the install crew in the field as needed.
Responsibilities
- Set up, program (as required), and operate CNC equipment such as plasma tables, drills, beam lines, mills, lathes, and saws used in structural steel fabrication.
- Interpret and work from shop drawings, blueprints, and work orders to ensure accurate machining and fabrication of components.
- Load and unload raw steel materials onto CNC machines safely and efficiently.
- Monitor machine operations continuously to maintain accuracy, quality, and adherence to specifications.
- Make minor adjustments to CNC programs or machine settings to correct issues and optimize performance.
- Inspect finished parts to verify they meet specified tolerances and quality standards.
- Assist with general fabrication tasks, including grinding, cutting, deburring, and material handling to support overall shop production.
- Operate forklifts, overhead cranes, or other shop equipment when certified, ensuring safe material movement and workflow.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in both the shop and field environments.
- Support other departments and team members as production demands require, including assisting welders and fitters.
- Perform routine machine maintenance, such as cleaning, lubrication, and basic checks, and promptly report any malfunctions or repair needs.
- Follow all shop safety procedures and consistently wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Ensure compliance with company policies and OSHA safety standards in both shop and field settings.
- Work as part of the install crew in the field when needed, participating in steel erection and installation activities.
- Arrive on time and be prepared to report either to the shop or job site depending on daily assignment, starting work at 7:00 am.
- Work scheduled weekday shifts and be willing to work overtime after regular hours and occasionally on weekends during busy periods.
- Lift materials and equipment up to 50+ lbs and stand for extended periods while performing manual labor in a physically demanding environment.
- Collaborate with other trades and site supervisors to coordinate work and maintain efficient project progress.
- Minimum of 6 months of experience operating CNC machinery in construction metal fabrication, metal fabrication, or related fabrication shops.
- Proven ability to set up and operate CNC machines such as plasma tables, drills, beam lines, mills, lathes, and saws.
- Ability to read a tape measure accurately to 1/16 of an inch and perform precise measurements.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and work orders.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail in a fabrication environment.
- Ability to perform manual labor and work in a physically demanding environment, including lifting 50+ lbs and standing for extended periods.
- Basic math and measurement skills, including the use of measuring tools for fabrication work.
- Reliable transportation to report to the shop or job site as required.
- Willingness and ability to work overtime during the week and occasionally on weekends when production requires.
- Willingness to work in the field on the install crew and participate in steel erection activities.
- Positive attitude and strong work ethic, with a commitment to safety and quality.
- Ability to work effectively in both shop and field environments and as part of a small, coordinated team.
- Previous experience operating CNC machines specifically in steel fabrication is preferred.
- Experience with manufacturing welding and production welding in a fabrication setting is beneficial.
- Forklift or overhead crane operating experience is a plus, particularly with appropriate certifications.
- OSHA 10 certification is preferred and supports compliance with safety standards.
- AWS D1.1 certification (American Welding Society's Structural Welding Code for Steel) is a nice-to-have credential.
- Experience in steel erection and working alongside install crews in the field is advantageous.
- Familiarity with grinding, cutting, deburring, and other general fabrication tasks.
- Ability to work in coordination with other trades and site supervisors on active job sites.
- Comfort working in a non-climate-controlled shop environment with seasonal temperature variations.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain organization, cleanliness, and safety in work areas.
This opportunity offers long-term employment with a stable organization that maintains a diverse portfolio of projects, providing consistent work and job security. Employees receive on-the-job training, support for earning paid certifications, and clear room for advancement, allowing motivated individuals to grow their skills and careers over time. The fabrication and install team is a small, close-knit group that works collaboratively to get the job done, fostering a supportive environment where many team members have stayed for five or more years.
Work Environment
The role involves a combination of shop-based fabrication work and field-based steel erection and installation. Team members may report either to the shop or directly to the job site depending on the day, with report time at 6:45 am and work starting at 7:00 am. Shop hours are Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to approximately 3:45 pm, while field hours run Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. Overtime is worked after the scheduled shift during weekdays and occasionally on weekends, particularly during busier periods forecasted toward the end of the year. The fabrication and install team consists of about 14 people who report to a production supervisor and collaborate closely to complete projects. The shop is not climate controlled, so it can be hot in the summer and cold in the winter, and candidates must be prepared to work in all weather conditions and outdoor elements. The work environment includes exposure to loud noises, heavy machinery, and active construction sites, requiring consistent use of appropriate PPE and adherence to safety procedures. Dress typically aligns with industrial fabrication and field work, emphasizing durable workwear suitable for steel fabrication, installation activities, and varying weather conditions.
