Job Title: 5-Axis CNC Machinist / Operator
Job Description

This role focuses on setting up and operating 3-, 4-, and 5-axis CNC machines to produce precision components for aerospace, space, military, and advanced manufacturing applications. You will use a variety of machine tools, cutting tools, and precision measuring instruments to ensure parts meet strict specifications and quality standards, while contributing to continuous improvement of machining processes.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate a variety of 3-, 4-, and 5-axis CNC machines, cutters, and work-holding tools to produce precision parts according to specifications.
  • Calculate dimensions and tolerances using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, portable CMM, and FARO arms.
  • Machine parts to exact specifications, ensuring proper selection and use of 5- and 3-axis machines for each job.
  • Set up, adjust, and operate basic and specialized machine tools to perform precision machining operations.
  • Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines following setup documentation.
  • Measure, examine, and test completed parts using precision instruments (micrometers, calipers, FARO arms, gauges) to verify conformance to customer requirements and check for defects.
  • Monitor machine feed rates and speeds during machining to maintain optimal performance and part quality.
  • Maintain machine tools and production equipment in proper operational condition through routine maintenance and timely adjustments.
  • Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, and engineering information to determine product requirements and confirm conformance.
  • Operate equipment to verify operational efficiency and make necessary adjustments to improve performance.
  • Diagnose machine tool malfunctions and determine appropriate adjustments or repairs.
  • Collaborate with engineering, supervisory, and inspection personnel to verify technical information and resolve machining issues.
  • Fit and assemble fixtures and cutters to manufacture or repair customer products.
  • Dispose of scrap and waste materials in accordance with company policies and environmental regulations.
  • Separate scrap, waste, and related materials for reuse, recycling, or proper disposal.
  • Evaluate machining procedures and recommend changes or modifications to improve efficiency and adaptability in line with Kaizen and continuous improvement practices.
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance and determine when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
  • Watch gauges, dials, and other indicators to ensure machines are working properly and safely.
  • Control the operations of equipment and systems during machining and related processes.
  • Conduct tests and inspections of products and processes to evaluate quality and performance.
  • Troubleshoot operating errors, determine root causes, and implement corrective actions.
  • Assemble electromechanical or hydraulic systems as required for production or fixtures.
  • Assemble machine tools, parts, and fixtures to support production operations.
  • Disassemble equipment for maintenance or repair when necessary.
  • Install mechanical components in production equipment according to specifications.
  • Mount attachments and tools onto production equipment safely and accurately.
  • Move product using pallet jacks or forklifts to designated areas, following material handling procedures.
  • Inspect equipment for safety hazards using the 6S checklist and other safety protocols.
  • Verify calibration and offset alignment of production equipment to maintain accuracy.
  • Confirm certification status of inspection equipment before use.
  • Maintain production and processing equipment, including replacing worn components as needed.
Essential Skills
  • At least 6 months of machining experience in a production or job shop environment.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 1–2 years of experience running 3-, 4-, and 5-axis numerical control machines preferred.
  • Ability to set up and operate 3-, 4-, and 5-axis CNC machines, including basic and specialized machine tools.
  • Proficiency with micrometers, calipers, height gauges, and other precision measuring instruments.
  • Experience with Fanuc-based controls and Haas controls for CNC machines.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and engineering documentation.
  • Strong mathematics skills for calculating dimensions, tolerances, and machining parameters.

Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with Mazak machines, including 4-axis and 5-axis configurations.
  • Ability to perform CNC setup, including tooling, fixtures, and offsets.
  • Knowledge of G and M codes for CNC programming and editing.
  • Experience with Haas mills and related controls.
  • Familiarity with Smooth X controls and Vortex i-630V operations.
  • Hands-on experience with specific models such as Vortex i-630V.
  • Experience with Siemens-based controls in a CNC environment.
  • Ability to deburr parts and perform finishing operations to meet quality standards.
  • Proficiency using multiple types of go/no-go gauges, height gauges, and air gauges.
  • Comfort using hand tools, dotcos, and grinders in a precision machining context.
  • Experience with analytical software and Verisurf inspection software for measurement and verification.
  • Ability to operate GUI-based software and industrial control software related to CNC operations.
  • Experience editing CNC programs and optimizing machining processes.
  • Familiarity with Kaizen and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Capability to assemble electromechanical or hydraulic systems and machine fixtures.
  • Experience with pallet jacks and forklifts for material movement (certification may be required per company policy).

Work Environment

The role is based in a modern machine shop that produces precision components and sub-assemblies for aerospace, space, military, and related high-technology projects. Openings are available on multiple shifts, with 5-axis CNC machine operator roles primarily on 2nd and 3rd shift. Typical shift schedules include: 1st shift Monday–Thursday from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; 2nd shift Monday–Thursday from 4:15 p.m. to 2:45 a.m.; and 3rd shift Friday–Sunday from 4:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with additional comp time provided when all three full days are worked. All new employees complete approximately 6–8 weeks of training, typically on day shift, to learn processes before moving to 2nd or 3rd shift. The environment centers on CNC machining with advanced controls such as HAAS, Fanuc, and Siemens, and uses a wide range of tools including boring bars, reamers, cutters, calipers, micrometers, hand tools, dotcos, grinders, go/no-go gauges, height gauges, air gauges, and FARO arms. Work is performed around production equipment, industrial controls, and inspection software such as Verisurf. Safety, organization, and cleanliness are emphasized through 6S practices, and the atmosphere reflects a high-precision, technology-driven shop supporting demanding aerospace and semiconductor applications.

The pay range for this position is $41600.00 - $52000.00/yr.
