Job Title: General Maintenance Technician
Job Description
The General Maintenance Technician supports a highly automated distribution operation by performing both mechanical and electrical maintenance and repair on complex material handling systems. This role focuses on PLC troubleshooting and root cause analysis while acting as a liaison between internal teams and external vendors. The technician works in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and must manage multiple priorities, communicate clearly, and drive issues to resolution with minimal supervision.
Responsibilities
- Perform mechanical and electrical maintenance and repairs on automated material handling systems in a distribution environment.
- Troubleshoot and repair integrated systems that use PLCs, including Allen Bradley PLCs (both legacy and newer models).
- Diagnose and resolve issues with high-speed automated sorting machines, conveyors, VFDs, photo eyes, sensors, robotic equipment, gantry cranes, and related components.
- Conduct PLC troubleshooting and root cause analysis to identify and correct recurring or complex equipment problems.
- Execute preventive maintenance (PM) programs on PLC-controlled equipment and update equipment status using TMI Systems software.
- Maintain and repair 3-phase motors (480V) and other electrical components in accordance with safety and quality standards.
- Interpret and work from blueprints, schematic diagrams, and technical documentation to perform accurate repairs and installations.
- Use hand tools, test equipment, and fabrication or machine shop tools to repair, modify, and improve equipment performance.
- Perform troubleshooting and repairs on hydraulic and pneumatic systems associated with material handling equipment.
- Document maintenance activities, repairs, and findings clearly and accurately in maintenance systems.
- Collaborate with other technicians and cross-functional teams to share information, offer solutions, and ensure equipment reliability.
- Act as a liaison for internal and external resources, including coordinating with vendors or contractors as needed.
- Manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously while meeting deadlines and maintaining high quality standards.
- Be available for on-call support as needed to minimize downtime and maintain continuous operation of automated systems.
- Contribute to a culture of quality, safety, and reliability by following established procedures and recommending improvements.
Essential Skills
- 3–5 years of experience maintaining and repairing manufacturing or distribution equipment.
- Hands-on experience with mechanical and electrical systems that use PLCs for automation.
- Proficiency in PLC troubleshooting, particularly with Allen Bradley PLCs (legacy and current models).
- Strong troubleshooting and repair skills with a focus on root cause analysis.
- Experience working with conveyors, high-speed automated sorting systems, and integrated material handling equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematic diagrams, and technical documentation.
- Knowledge of 3-phase motors (480V) and related electrical components.
- Experience with servos, VFDs, sensors, photo eyes, and similar control devices.
- Practical experience with hydraulics and pneumatics in an industrial setting.
- Competence in using hand tools and standard maintenance equipment safely and effectively.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills for interacting with team members and external resources.
- Ability to work independently, be self-directed, and deliver results in a dynamic environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working with robotic equipment and gantry cranes in an automated environment.
- Familiarity with PLC preventive maintenance programs and status updates using TMI Systems or similar software.
- Experience in a fully automated distribution or manufacturing facility with extensive conveyor and sorting systems.
- Experience in fabrication or machine shop work to support equipment modifications and repairs.
- Demonstrated ability to function as a team player, working in groups and contributing solutions.

Work Environment
This role is based in a large, automated distribution center that operates extensive material handling systems, including approximately 30 miles of conveyors, multiple sorters, and cranes. You will work alongside a team of about 30 multi-craft technicians at various levels, including general, PLC, and master technicians, in a collaborative, team-focused environment that emphasizes communication, problem-solving, and reliability. The facility is climate controlled and equipped with advanced automation technologies such as Allen Bradley PLCs, high-speed sorters, VFDs, sensors, robotic equipment, and gantry cranes. The position includes shift-based work: one opening is for a night shift from 10:00 p.m. to 8:30 a.m., Wednesday through Saturday, and another is for a second shift from 2:00 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., Wednesday through Saturday. The dress code typically includes steel-toe boots, jeans, and a plain shirt to support safety and practicality in the distribution center environment.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $29.00 - $31.00/hr.
