Job Title: SMT Engineer
Job Description
The SMT Engineer leads the planning, implementation, and continuous improvement of SMT and circuit board assembly manufacturing processes. This role partners closely with Design, Operations, and Quality teams to ensure products are manufacturable, cost-effective, and compliant with quality standards, while establishing and scaling SMT manufacturing operations and providing technical leadership in high-reliability environments.
Responsibilities
- Lead the planning, implementation, and continuous improvement of SMT and circuit board assembly manufacturing processes.
- Partner with Design, Operations, and Quality teams to ensure products are manufacturable, cost-effective, and meet established quality standards.
- Support new line launches, equipment commissioning, and production ramp-up activities to ensure smooth transitions into manufacturing.
- Establish and scale SMT manufacturing operations, including line setup, process development, staffing, and overall operational readiness.
- Develop and maintain standardized processes, detailed work instructions, training programs, and operational procedures for SMT production.
- Hire, train, mentor, and manage SMT production teams to build strong technical capability and high-performance culture.
- Conduct Design for Manufacturability (DFM) reviews of PCB assemblies, bills of materials (BOMs), and manufacturing processes to optimize production.
- Develop and optimize SMT processes, tooling, stencils, fixtures, and validation methods to improve quality, yield, and efficiency.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on quality enhancement, yield improvement, efficiency gains, and defect reduction.
- Lead new product introductions and manage the transition of products from development into full production.
- Oversee SMT equipment programming, setup, validation, maintenance, and calibration programs to ensure reliable operation.
- Troubleshoot manufacturing and equipment issues using structured root cause analysis and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Support production scalability through capacity planning, line balancing, and operational planning to meet run-rate and productivity targets.
- Ensure compliance with quality, traceability, regulatory, and audit requirements across SMT manufacturing operations.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date technical documentation for processes, equipment, and validation activities.
- Coordinate with equipment vendors for implementation, optimization, and ongoing technical support of SMT machinery and tools.
- Present technical updates, findings, and recommendations to stakeholders in a clear and concise manner.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, preferably Electrical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering.
- At least 6 years of experience in the design, execution, and sustaining of manufacturing processes and technologies, with technical leadership in high-reliability SMT environments.
- Proven track record of technical leadership in designing and implementing manufacturing processes that meet cost, productivity, run-rate, and quality expectations.
- Thorough knowledge of validation principles, manufacturing processes, quality systems, and engineering design fundamentals.
- Demonstrated electrical and automation programming aptitude applicable to manufacturing equipment and processes.
- Experience planning, coordinating, and performing a broad range of manufacturing engineering activities.
- Strong SMT engineering skills, including SMT process development, optimization, and troubleshooting.
- Experience in engineering management or technical team leadership within a manufacturing context.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- MEMS Lorain Community College credential or a degree in Mechatronics, Electrical, or Electronic Engineering is highly desirable.
- Experience working within ISO 9001 quality management systems and related documentation and audit practices.
- Experience in SMT management, including team leadership and operational oversight.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including Design, Operations, Quality, and external equipment vendors.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present technical updates, findings, and recommendations to diverse stakeholders.
- Commitment to continuous improvement and a structured approach to optimizing quality, yield, and efficiency.
Work Environment
This is an onsite role in a state-of-the-art, growing manufacturing environment with best-in-class SMT capabilities. The SMT Engineer works closely with production lines, advanced SMT equipment, and cross-functional teams to support line setup, commissioning, and ongoing optimization. The setting emphasizes high-reliability manufacturing, adherence to quality and traceability standards, and collaboration with equipment vendors and internal stakeholders.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Permanent position based out of Hudson, OH.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $100000.00 - $130000.00/yr.
