Position Description
UNOS is seeking an Associate Biostatistician / Associate Data Scientist to support data-driven research, analytics, and initiatives aligned with organizational priorities.
This role is designed for early-career professionals seeking to build foundational skills in biostatistics and data science within a healthcare research setting. In this role, you will work with complex datasets under guidance to support research and analytical efforts. You will apply established statistical and analytical methods to solve well-defined problems while developing expertise in transplantation, healthcare data, and organizational processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute analysis plans using statistical and data science methods (e.g., regression, survival analysis, predictive modeling, machine learning)
- Support data cleaning, management, and transformation
- Execute analyses that generate insights and support decision-making
- Prepare summaries, visualizations, and reports for a range of audiences
- Contribute to research projects, analytical initiatives, and data-driven product development efforts
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including research, data engineering, software development, and DevOps to support model development and deployment
- Build and maintain reproducible analytical workflows and contribute to shared codebases following established development standards
- Support the development, testing, and implementation of statistical and machine learning models under the guidance of more experienced team members
- Use AI-assisted tools (e.g., Copilot, Claude, or similar) to enhance coding, analysis, and documentation workflows
- Participate in quality checks to ensure accuracy, reproducibility, and reliability of results
- Manage assignments and meet deadlines with guidance
- Support development of manuscripts, abstracts, and presentations
- Actively develop skills through mentorship and training
Minimum Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of experience in statistical analysis or data science (including graduate research experience).
- Experience working with real-world datasets and analytical tools
Critical Skills
- Foundational statistical analysis
- Data manipulation, management, and reproducible workflows
- Programming in R, Python, SQL, or similar tools
- Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git)
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Willingness to learn new tools, methods, and subject areas
Preferred Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working with healthcare or health-related data
- Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, or similar)
- Exposure to machine learning concepts or predictive modeling
- Familiarity with cloud platforms, big data tools, or high-performance computing
- Exposure to model deployment or data engineering concepts through coursework or projects
- Experience contributing to presentations or publications
Education
- Master's degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Data Science, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or a related field.
Physical Requirements
- General office demands
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Frequent reaching, handling, and fine manipulation for using office equipment, filing, and managing paperwork.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, mouse, and other office tools.
