Job Title: Controller

Job Description

The Controller supports the organization’s financial operations by managing daily accounting activities, month‑end and year‑end processes, audit preparation, and special projects. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, this role ensures that all financial results comply with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and applicable regulatory requirements. The position is part of a small, collaborative corporate office where team members handle a variety of responsibilities, and it is ideal for an analytical, detail‑oriented professional who thrives in a fast‑paced, supportive, and team‑focused workplace.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general accounting functions related to Accounts Payable, General Ledger, Inventory Accounting, and Accounts Receivable.
  • Manage the General Ledger, including preparing journal entries, performing account analysis, completing reconciliations, and maintaining the chart of accounts.
  • Oversee Accounts Payable, including vendor setup, invoice coding, organizing and approving invoices for timely payment, and ensuring expenses are charged to appropriate accounts.
  • Provide backup support for Accounts Receivable as needed, including assisting with customer billing and payment application.
  • Reconcile and balance all bank accounts, verify deposits, and respond to inquiries from financial institutions.
  • Reconcile prepaid expense and product accounts and review and reconcile monthly credit card reports.
  • Manage inventory accounting and analysis, including shrink reporting and related reconciliations.
  • Maintain Fixed Assets within the designated fixed asset system, ensuring accurate records and proper capitalization.
  • Handle annual and periodic tax filings, including personal property returns and state and federal reporting requirements.
  • Prepare and distribute annual 1099 forms in accordance with regulatory guidelines.
  • Assist with month‑end, quarter‑end, and year‑end closing processes, ensuring transactions comply with GAAP and internal policies and are completed within required deadlines.
  • Coordinate with external auditors during annual audit preparation and support tax‑related data collection and documentation.
  • Perform general clerical and administrative tasks such as filing, copying, and operating office equipment to support the Accounting Department.
  • Print and organize monthly customer statements for Accounts Receivable and ensure timely distribution.
  • Support all aspects of the financial closing process, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with internal and external requirements.

Essential Skills

  • Associate degree in accounting or a related field required; bachelor’s degree preferred, or equivalent experience.
  • Strong understanding of standard accounting practices and cost accounting principles.
  • Demonstrated experience with audits, financial reporting, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, general ledger management, and closing processes.
  • Strong balance sheet management and reconciliation skills.
  • Ability to perform detailed financial analysis and interpret accounting data.
  • Organized, analytical, and detail‑focused, with the ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
  • Consistently accurate and timely in completing accounting tasks and meeting deadlines.
  • Willingness to assist with related tasks across the Accounting Department as needed.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively at all levels of the organization.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Retail or agricultural accounting experience is a bonus.
  • Experience with software conversion or implementation projects is a plus.
  • Experience with QuickBooks, iRely, or AgVantage accounting systems is preferred.
  • Interest in growing into broader leadership responsibilities, including potential future CFO opportunities.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced environment and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to accuracy, integrity, and compliance in all financial reporting.

Work Environment

This is a full‑time, Monday through Friday, in‑office position based in a small, collaborative corporate environment. Team members work closely together, often supporting a wide range of accounting and administrative responsibilities. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Muncie, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $31.25 - $40.87/hr.
