Job Description
The National Institute on Aging (NIA), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Director, Division of Neuroscience (DN).
The mission of the Division of Neuroscience is to promote understanding of the aging nervous system in order to improve health and quality of life for older individuals. With a budget of approximately $2.4 billion and a staff of 70 full-time employees, the Division encompasses five branches: Neurobiology of Aging and Neurodegeneration, Behavioral and Systems Neuroscience, Clinical Interventions and Diagnostics, Population Studies and Genetics, and Translational Research.
The Director is responsible for planning, directing, and evaluating extramural and collaborative research and training across these five branches, while also providing critical oversight for NIA's Congressionally-mandated Alzheimer's disease research portfolio from basic neuroscience to translational research and clinical trials of new therapeutic interventions.
The Director collaborates with other NIA Divisions, NIH Institutes, Centers, and Offices, and other Federal agencies in coordinating and supporting relevant scientific activities, including developing material for distribution to Congress, scientists, and the public. The Director also maintains liaisons with private and public organizations and professional societies representing researchers and clinicians in brain aging research and serves as a spokesperson to public audiences about NIA's activities, the current state of the science, and research investments and projects.
This is a full-time federal position (Title 42, 0601, Scientific Executive) located in Rockville, Maryland. Appointees may be a US citizen, Legal Permanent Resident, or non-US citizen eligible for valid work authorization. This position is subject to background investigation.
To apply, please submit a CV with bibliography, three letters of reference, and a statement addressing your qualifications and interest in the position to NIADNDirector@nih.gov. The application period runs from July 10, 2026, to August 21, 2026.
