Job Description
This role leads field survey operations for a wide range of projects, including boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS, subdivision, and construction stakeout surveys. You perform survey calculations, collect and verify data, and support the preparation of survey documents for municipal, commercial, industrial, and utility-related projects across Southeast Michigan.
Responsibilities
- Conduct various types of field surveying, including boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS, subdivision, and construction stakeout surveys.
- Focus initially on topographic and construction staking work, with some boundary surveying primarily to determine right-of-way rather than completing certified surveys.

- Interpret and verify the accuracy of survey data, including measurements, calculations, and field notes.
- Assist with the preparation of survey data, charts, plots, maps, records, and documents related to surveys.
- Search legal records, survey records, and land titles to obtain property information needed for surveys.
- Assist with writing descriptions of surveys for use in deeds, leases, and other legal documents.
- Monitor and help maintain survey equipment and supplies, ensuring they are properly used, calibrated, and available for field operations.
- Assist in reviewing scope, budget, and schedule for new project tasks, and provide input on resource needs and field planning.
- Monitor task budgets and progress, reporting issues or variances to project leadership.
- Conduct on-site inspections as needed to confirm survey conditions and support project requirements.
- Prepare project status updates and other reports related to survey activities and field progress.
- Assist in the preparation of proposals by providing technical input on survey approaches, schedules, and resource needs.
- Support Project Managers by coordinating field efforts, communicating project needs, and ensuring survey work aligns with project objectives.
- Attend client, public, project, and staff meetings, including client progress meetings, plan reviews, and pre-construction meetings.
- Perform construction layout and stakeout activities using Trimble GPS and total station equipment.
- Travel to project sites throughout Southeast Michigan, particularly within driving distance of Detroit and Ann Arbor.
Essential Skills
- At least 3 years of experience in surveying.
- Hands-on experience with construction staking.
- Experience performing construction layout for a variety of project types.
