Job Title: Medical Assistant – Mohs and Dermatology Clinic
Job Description
This Medical Assistant role supports a busy dermatology practice with a strong focus on Mohs micrographic surgery and general and cosmetic dermatology. You prepare and maintain exam and procedure rooms, assist the Mohs surgeon through all stages of surgical care, provide patient education and wound care instructions, and ensure accurate documentation in multiple electronic medical record systems. You also handle scheduling, insurance verification, and pathology communications while adhering to strict compliance standards and cross-training in related clinical areas.
Responsibilities
- Prepare exam and procedure rooms for Mohs micrographic surgery and other surgical and medical visits, ensuring proper setup of instruments and efficient clinic flow.
- Assist the Mohs surgeon during all stages of the procedure, including preoperative care, tissue preparation, hemostasis, wound closure, and postoperative care.
- Perform patient intake by obtaining medical history, reviewing consent forms, obtaining surgical photographs, and addressing pre-procedure questions and concerns.
- Provide clear wound care instructions and educate patients on post-procedure expectations and follow-up.
- Process and handle tissue specimens for pathology evaluation according to established protocols.
- Ensure complete and accurate documentation of procedures, medications, MIPS data, and follow-up instructions in the electronic medical record (EMR) system.
- Schedule pre- and post-operative appointments and assist patients with inquiries related to their visits and procedures.
- Confirm patient insurance coverage and obtain prior authorizations when required.
- Accurately complete patient charting and documentation in the EMR.
- Manage the pathology log and act as liaison between physician and patient to communicate pathology results, documenting all communication according to protocol.
- Record required information in compliance logs, including pathology, biopsy, laboratory, and temperature records.
- Adhere to OSHA, HIPAA, and infection control standards and complete mandatory compliance training.
- Cross-train in the Mohs laboratory to perform histotechnology-related tasks to the extent allowed by state-specific CLIA requirements.
- Cross-train in general and cosmetic dermatology to support broader clinic needs.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support smooth clinic operations.
Essential Skills
- Hands-on medical assisting experience in a clinical setting.
- Strong patient care skills with the ability to provide clear instructions and support before and after procedures.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, particularly in dermatology and surgical care.
- Experience working with electronic medical record (EMR) systems, including documenting procedures, medications, and follow-up plans.
- Ability to prepare exam and procedure rooms and maintain efficient clinic flow.
- Skill in processing and handling tissue specimens according to protocol.
- Attention to detail and accuracy in charting, compliance logs, and pathology documentation.
- Understanding of and adherence to OSHA, HIPAA, and infection control standards.
- Effective communication skills to serve as a liaison between physicians and patients regarding pathology results and care plans.
- Organizational skills to manage scheduling, insurance verification, and prior authorizations.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- 1–2 years of recent experience in a dermatology or surgical setting preferred.
- Medical Assistant (MA) certification preferred.
- Experience in Mohs micrographic surgery support or histotechnology tasks is a plus.
- Experience in general and cosmetic dermatology is advantageous.
- Familiarity with EMR systems such as NextGen and EMA is highly beneficial.
- Comfort working within a specialty practice and learning multiple EMR platforms.
- Ability to adapt to cross-training and take on additional responsibilities as needed.
Work Environment
This role is based in a specialty dermatology practice, working closely with one or more providers in a clinical setting focused on Mohs surgery and general and cosmetic dermatology. You work with modern healthcare technologies, including multiple EMR systems such as NextGen and EMA, and follow established protocols for tissue handling, pathology logging, and compliance documentation. The typical dress code is solid-color scrubs, with flexibility in color. The clinic generally provides a one-hour break around normal lunchtime, with timing adjusted based on clinic flow and patient scheduling. The environment is fast-paced, detail-oriented, and collaborative, offering the opportunity to gain specialized experience in dermatologic surgery, histotechnology components within CLIA guidelines, and broader dermatology care while supporting high-quality patient experiences.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $25.00 - $25.00/hr.
