Established in 1985, Hamilton Families is San Francisco's leading nonprofit social service provider to families experiencing homelessness, with carefully designed programs to prevent family homelessness, provide emergency shelter and transitional housing to families in times of need, support the well-being of children who experience homelessness, and quickly return families to safe and stable housing providing them the resources and case management needed to achieve long-term housing stability. We currently operate these programs across multiple sites in San Francisco and the Greater Bay Area.

Hamilton Families is entering an exciting period of growth and innovation as we launch a new Strategic Plan focused on ending family homelessness by solving generational poverty. The Director of Strategic Philanthropy will play a key leadership role in securing the philanthropic resources needed to advance our new anti-poverty strategic initiatives, strengthen donor partnerships, and support the organization's long-term vision.


Program and Position Overview

The Development Team raises approximately $7 million annually in private philanthropy and is building toward significant growth through expanded major gifts, institutional partnerships, special events, and a multi-year campaign. In addition, we receive more than $500,000 each year in donated time, materials and services.

Hamilton Families seeks an equitable and passionate Director of Strategic Philanthropy with strong organizational, relationship-building, and fundraising skills. Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Director of Strategic Philanthropy will lead key aspects of fundraising, partnership development, data management, and supervision of the development team. This is an excellent opportunity for a development professional interested in working on an important issue in our community with an engaged board of directors and an outstanding, committed staff.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Partner with the Chief Development Officer to develop and implement annual fundraising, engagement, and communications strategies, execute fundraising strategies, including major gifts, institutional giving, campaigns, events, and donor stewardship initiatives.
  • Develop compelling fundraising strategies and donor engagement opportunities that advance the goals and priorities of Hamilton Families' strategic plan.
  • Support planning and execution of Hamilton Families' strategic plan initiative, including donor strategy, prospect management, and board engagement.
  • Cultivate, steward, and manage a portfolio of individual donors and prospects, including major donors, donor-advised fund advisors, family foundations, and emerging philanthropists.
  • Manage and provide leadership, supervision, and support the Development Team.
  • Provide oversight and strategic direction for the organization's volunteer engagement program, including supervision of the staff member responsible for volunteer recruitment, retention, training, and recognition
  • Lead the management of donor information systems, including Salesforce administration, data governance, reporting, analytics, and database optimization to support fundraising and engagement efforts.

Qualifications, Skills and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university OR five years of experience in a related

Position

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive fundraising experience, including at least 3yearssupervising staff or leading teams.
  • Experience securing and stewarding five- and six-figure gifts from individual donors, foundations, corporations, or a combination thereof.
  • Knowledge of Bay Area philanthropic landscape
  • Experience working on fundraising in the nonprofit or social service sector
  • Skilled and inclusive people manager with experience in strength-based coaching
  • Self-directed; able to take initiative and to work successfully as a project leader or team member
  • Team player with integrity and follow-through
  • Strong interpersonal skills and oral presentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and/or interact with all levels of stakeholders
  • Meticulous attention to detail and an aesthetic eye in reviewing fundraising materials
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel, etc.)
  • Proficient with donor database software, experience with reporting in Salesforce is preferred
  • Sensitivity to the needs of families experiencing homelessness; able and willing to work with diverse staff and program participants
  • Passionate about the mission, vision, and values of Hamilton Families
  • Criminal background check, fingerprint imaging, TB (Tuberculosis) clearance, and documentation required post offer.

Compensation: $135,000-145,000 annually
