Job Description

An Ophthalmic Scribe is present during the patient exam and are the official recorder of the actions and works of the physician as they occur allowing face-to-face interaction between the physician and the patient helping to ensure our patients receive the highest quality of care. This position requires excellent customer service skills and communication.


Ophthalmic skills include

  • Document all findings the physician dictates during the exam and any discussions into the patients chart in appropriate sections.
  • Assist the physician in the exam lane with whatever they may need during the patient exam. This may include assisting with minor surgical procedures.
  • Creating and finalizing glasses and contact lens prescriptions.
  • Creating orders and referrals for consults / testing if needed.
  • Assisting the physician with billing and coding of exams, testing, and procedures.
  • Perform diagnostic testing if needed such as visual fields, fundus photography, OCT imaging, corneal topography, and pachymetry.
  • Administer topical ophthalmic or oral medications under the direction of the physician.
  • Dispense and review any necessary patient education.
  • Complete requests for prescription refills and return patient calls to answer questions or address concerns as authorized by the physician, with full documentation in the patients chart.
  • Maintains cleanliness and orderliness of exam rooms during the work day. Keeping rooms appropriately stocked with all needed medications, forms, consents, and educational materials.
  • Complies with all practice procedures and protocols. Complies with all State and Federal regulations.


Position Qualifications

  • Accuracy – Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly with attention to detail. Knowledge and understanding of EMR navigation and charting.
  • Communication – Ability to communicate respectfully and effectively with physicians, patients, and staff both verbally and in writing. Requires good listening skills.
  • Empathetic – Ability to exhibit understanding, patience, and compassion with excellent customer service skills.
  • Organized – Possess strong organizational skills including the ability to manage time effectively while maintaining a high level of quality of care and work.
  • Reliability – Demonstrates reliability in attendance and punctuality. Requires having a good work ethic.
  • Team Player – Ability to work together to ensure the best possible patient care.
