Job Description
The Town of Falmouth welcomes applications for a Parks Laborer position with the Department of Public Works (DPW) Parks and Forestry Division. This is a stable, full-time, year-round, benefited position that works 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with substantial overtime opportunities. Overtime worked between the hours of midnight and 7 a.m. is compensated at double-time.
The Town supports and covers the cost of additional licensing and training, and advancement opportunities are available within the Parks and Forestry Division and other divisions of the DPW.

This position plays an important role in ensuring that these community spaces remain safe, clean, and welcoming for residents and visitors.
Under the general direction of the Parks Crew Leaders, Parks Laborers perform a wide variety of manual and semi-skilled work related to maintaining and improving public parks, athletic fields, school grounds, and other public spaces, while assisting with forestry projects as needed. Essential functions include, but are not limited to:
- Mowing lawns, weed-whacking, trimming brush, and maintaining landscaped areas through seeding, loaming, fertilizing, watering, raking, planting, pruning, and related grounds maintenance activities;
- Maintaining and lining athletic fields, maintaining tennis courts, assisting with the installation and maintenance of playground equipment, and repairing and painting benches, fences, and other park amenities;
- Performing pick-and-shovel work, excavating and backfilling trenches, removing refuse, maintaining clean public spaces, and assisting with a variety of public works projects;
- Operating Town trucks, hand tools, and power equipment used in parks and grounds maintenance operations and assisting with the routine servicing and maintenance of equipment;
- Assisting with tree maintenance and other Parks and Forestry Division projects as assigned;
- Assisting other Town departments with public works projects and special assignments as needed;
- Observing established safety procedures and complying with all applicable workplace safety requirements; and
- Performing other related work as needed.
The Parks Laborer also supports snow and ice control operations, including plowing, sanding, and de-icing roads, sidewalks, schools, parking areas, and other municipal facilities. This position responds to emergency call-back assignments and assists with emergency repairs and storm response operations as needed.
This is an active, hands-on outdoor position involving continuous moderate to heavy physical work performed in a variety of weather and environmental conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, coastal conditions, construction sites, and other potentially hazardous public works environments. The position may require operating motor vehicles and power equipment under varying weather conditions.
Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of one (1) year of experience in landscaping, grounds maintenance, forestry, and/or public works construction and maintenance activities; or any equivalent combination of education, training, or experience that demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.
Must be able to pass a pre-employment CORI background check, physical, and drug screening test. Must possess a general knowledge of the equipment, materials, and methods used in municipal public works construction and maintenance and the ability to safely operate hand and power tools.
The successful candidate is dependable, safety-conscious, hardworking, eager to learn, and takes pride in their work. Candidates must be able to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team, operate equipment safely and effectively, lift and/or move up to 75 pounds, safely perform physically demanding work throughout the workday, and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers and the public.
Required Licenses:
- Massachusetts Class C Passenger Motor Vehicle Operator’s License; and
- OSHA-10 Certification (or ability to obtain within 180 days of hire)
Anticipated Starting Hourly Rate: Step 1 ($23.14/hour) - Step 3 ($25.03/hour)*, commensurate with qualifications and experience, with eligibility for annual advancement along the 9-step pay scale. Overtime opportunities available, including double-time pay for overtime worked between midnight and 7:00 a.m. *Rates effective the first full pay period of July 2026 for FY27.
