Research & Development Specialist (Food Manufacturing)

Are you passionate about food innovation and bringing new products to life? We are seeking a Research & Development Specialist to join our growing team in Lowell, MA. In this hands-on role, you'll work closely with the R&D Director, culinary team, and production staff to develop, test, and transition new food products into manufacturing while ensuring quality, consistency, and food safety standards are met.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare sample recipes and prototypes under the direction of the R&D Director.
- Support new product development and assist with transitioning products into production.
- Prepare and ship product samples to customers.
- Conduct, manage, and document daily production sample evaluations and taste panels.
- Assist in developing product formulas, recipes, and production procedures.
- Maintain development sample inventory and accurate documentation.
- Requisition, track, and record raw material and ingredient usage.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitized test kitchen following HACCP and food safety protocols.
- Measure and record product attributes including pH, consistency, and water activity.
- Assist with customer presentations, product demonstrations, and trade shows.
- Collaborate with production and cross-functional teams to ensure successful product launches.
Qualifications
- Associate degree in Culinary Arts, Food Science, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in a foodservice, culinary, or food manufacturing environment.
- Strong culinary skills with a passion for food development.
- Basic understanding of food science principles and technical applications.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, squat, climb, and perform repetitive movements throughout the workday.
- Lift, carry, push, or pull up to 60 pounds.
- Comfortable working around production equipment and moving machinery.
- Ability to work in hot, cold, humid, and steam-filled environments.
- Exposure to food ingredients, allergens, dust, and varying temperatures.
- Some travel may be required.
