Job Title: Set-Up Operator

Job Description

The Set-Up Operator performs tooling changeovers and set-ups for thermoforming machines efficiently and within defined time deadlines. This role is responsible for starting up and shutting down thermoforming lines, ensuring machines run safely and effectively, and supporting production quality through inspections and operator training. An early morning start, ideally at 6:00 a.m., is required, and the position is full-time within a plastic thermoforming environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform tooling changeovers and set-ups for thermoforming machines efficiently and within established time deadlines.
  • Start up and shut down thermoforming lines, including completing all required setups and changeovers.
  • Diagnose operating issues on thermoforming machines and perform minor adjustments and repairs to maintain efficient operation.
  • Conduct in-process inspections of parts throughout the production run to ensure they meet visual standards of acceptance.
  • Ensure machine operators are properly trained and consistently perform their duties correctly and safely.
  • Recognize defective materials by assessing color, surface blemishes, finish, and dimensions, and take appropriate corrective actions.
  • Report any non-critical machine deficiencies to the appropriate leadership or support personnel as needed.
  • Read and follow job order sheets, work instructions, and quality specification documents accurately.
  • Communicate clearly with supervisors and co-workers, providing and receiving verbal instructions and production information.
  • Safely operate forklifts, power tools, and hand tools as required for machine set-up and material handling.
  • Maintain excellent organization and documentation of setups, changeovers, and quality checks.
  • Apply problem-solving skills to make quick, sound decisions in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Support overall production goals by helping to minimize downtime and optimize machine performance.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum 5+ years of previous work experience as a Set-Up Technician or in a closely related set-up role.
  • Prior plastic processing and material handling experience in a manufacturing or thermoforming environment.
  • Ability to read and understand written and printed job order sheets, work instructions, and quality specification documents.
  • Ability to effectively hear verbal work instructions and other communications from supervisors and co-workers.
  • Strong verbal communication skills to clearly convey instructions and information to supervisors and co-workers.
  • Capability to stand on feet for the majority of the workday and safely lift 50+ pounds as needed.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and the ability to make quick, effective decisions.
  • Excellent organization, communication, and comprehension skills.
  • Knowledge and ability to safely operate forklifts, power tools, and hand tools.
  • High school diploma or GED.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • OSHA and safety certifications are a plus, including 10-hour and 30-hour safety training and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO).
  • Experience working in plastic thermoforming operations.
  • Comfort working with production blueprints, specifications, and plastic-related processes.
  • Attention to detail in identifying defects related to color, surface finish, and dimensional accuracy.
  • Strong teamwork skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with production staff and leadership.

Work Environment

This role is based in a plastic thermoforming production environment that operates in a fast-paced, hands-on manufacturing setting. Work is performed primarily on the production floor around thermoforming lines, where machinery, forklifts, power tools, and hand tools are used regularly. The position requires being on your feet for most of the shift and handling materials that may weigh over 50 pounds. An early morning schedule, with a preferred start time of 6:00 a.m., supports continuous operations and timely changeovers. Safety procedures and standards are integral to daily work, with an emphasis on proper equipment handling, lockout/tagout practices, and adherence to quality and operational guidelines. Dress typically aligns with a manufacturing environment, including appropriate workwear and personal protective equipment as required for safety.

The pay range for this position is $58000.00 - $70700.00/yr.
