Controls Engineer

Title: Controls Engineer
Location: This position will be based in Fruitland, Idaho, but will be able to work from the Meridian, Idaho office 1-2 days per week.

Position Overview
We are seeking a Controls Engineer to design, program, and commission industrial control systems that ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operation of manufacturing and process equipment. The role focuses on developing PLC and HMI solutions, implementing ladder logic and structured control code, troubleshooting and optimizing automated systems, and collaborating with mechanical, electrical, and production teams to deliver projects on time and to specification.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, program, and commission PLC-based control systems (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Mitsubishi) to meet process and production requirements.
  • Develop and configure HMI/SCADA interfaces for operator control, visualization, and data logging.
  • Write, test, and maintain ladder logic and other control code (structured text, function block diagrams) following industry best practices and coding standards.
  • Perform system integration, wiring verification, and factory acceptance testing (FAT) and site acceptance testing (SAT).
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve control system issues in both development and production environments to minimize downtime.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (mechanical, electrical, process engineering, and production) to define control requirements and support design reviews.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, including wiring diagrams, I/O lists, control narratives, and user manuals.
  • Implement safety-related controls and work with EHS to ensure compliance with applicable standards (e.g., NFPA 70E, IEC 61508) and lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by analyzing system performance and recommending automation enhancements.
  • Provide training and technical support to operators and maintenance personnel on control systems and HMI operation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, Mechatronics, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Proven experience programming PLCs and developing HMI/SCADA applications in an industrial environment.
  • Strong knowledge of ladder logic and experience applying it to machine and process control.
  • Familiarity with common PLC platforms (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Mitsubishi, etc.) and communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus).
  • Experience with control system design, I/O selection, and panel layout; ability to read and create electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Hands-on experience with commissioning, troubleshooting, and optimizing automated machinery and processes.
  • Working knowledge of safety standards and best practices for industrial automation.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and projects.
  • Willingness to travel to client sites for commissioning and support as required.
