Position SummaryThe Pharmacy Technician I supports pharmacists in the preparation, compounding, and dispensing of medications while maintaining compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations. Working under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist, you'll play a vital role in ensuring safe, efficient pharmacy operations and outstanding patient care.
What You'll DoPharmacy Operations
- Enter and maintain accurate patient and medication information in EPIC and other pharmacy systems.
- Assist with the preparation, compounding, packaging, and dispensing of medications.
- Retrieve, count, measure, and mix medications according to established procedures.
- Accurately fill medication orders and prescriptions in a timely manner.
- Receive, stock, secure, and maintain pharmacy inventory.
- Prepare medications for delivery or shipment after pharmacist verification.
- Deliver medications to nursing units and patient care areas promptly.
- Retrieve unused medications and process patient credits when appropriate.
- Follow hazardous waste handling and disposal procedures.
- Conduct quality assurance checks, including monitoring for outdated medications.
- Maintain clean, safe, and organized work areas and equipment.
- Prioritize tasks effectively based on patient needs and department demands.
- Participate in team meetings, huddles, and departmental communications.
Training & Professional Development
- Complete all required hospital, regulatory, and departmental education and competency requirements.
- Participate in pharmacy technician orientation and training programs.
- Complete EPIC and/or Willow training as required.
- Engage in ongoing learning and professional development opportunities.
Professionalism & Customer Service
- Follow all Mercy policies, procedures, and standards of conduct.
- Deliver exceptional customer service to patients, caregivers, and colleagues.
- Communicate effectively during shift changes and throughout daily operations.
- Build positive working relationships through collaboration and respect.
- Maintain professional appearance standards, including PPE requirements and dress code compliance.
Education
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Licensure
- Active Pharmacy Technician registration in good standing with the applicable State Board of Pharmacy required, or the ability to obtain registration by the first day of employment.
- Must complete all registration requirements, including fingerprinting and any required FBI background checks.
Experience
- One year of pharmacy-related experience preferred, but not required.
Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of pharmacy operations, medication handling, and regulatory requirements.
- Experience using pharmacy technology and workflow management tools.
- Ability to operate automated pharmacy systems and dispensing equipment.
- Strong troubleshooting, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to patient safety.
- Strong communication and customer service abilities.
- Ability to prioritize effectively and perform in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
