Summary of Position
An Engineering Tech I/Automation Technician is responsible for building and verifying the operation of all new and existing secondary equipment. The Engineering Tech I will assist engineering in designing and troubleshooting of secondary equipment to ensure proper function, safe operation, and desired efficiency.
Essential Duties, Responsibilities, & Authority
- Read and understand electrical schematic drawings to determine how to interface automation components back to main control panel.
- Install new control panels per engineering prints.
- Uses multi-meter, hand tools and electrical theory to diagnose and resolve control and instrumentation issues.
- Install, inspect, repair, and maintain a variety of electrical systems.
- Use blueprints, work instructions and schematics to perform assembly / build operations of new secondary equipment requiring the use of mills, drill presses, grinders, cutoff saws, etc.
- Determine the best way to route air and electrical lines to ensure range of motion without wear.
- Read schematics to install wiring/electrical and pneumatic systems on secondary equipment.
- Ensure all secondary equipment is guarded and operating to SIM safety standards.
- Control and maintain component inventory in R&D.
- Maintain MRO system and document all maintenance related items as equipment is serviced.
- Maintain contact with vendors for product supply and service of in-house products.
- Trouble shoot automation as needed to maintain an efficient workflow.
- Must continually work towards improving the secondary operations to achieve a zero-defect operation. Takes the initiative and works independently.
- Learns, practices, and supports all Lean Manufacturing tools to assist the company in the continuous improvement process. Lean manufacturing tools include 5S, Total Preventive Maintenance (TPM) and Value Stream Mapping (VSM).
- Maintains a safe working environment to minimize the possibility of an injury. Reports any unsafe conditions to supervisor.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education, Credentials, & Certifications
- 2-year degree from technical school or minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience with secondary equipment / automation systems
Job Specification
- Entry level to 5 year’s experience in the fabrication and repair of manufacturing equipment
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong analytical problem-solving skills.
- Basic computer skills are required including basic email, entering and modifying spreadsheets, and usage of IQMS / MRO.
- Ability to work independently.
- Uses good interpersonal communication techniques to work with co-workers. Is courteous and helpful when interacting with fellow employees. Attends available interpersonal skill training courses. Helps create a pleasant work environment.
- Ability to use small power hand tools safely.
- Attention to detail.
- Entry level (technical degree, little experience): $24–30/hr
- 3–5 years of relevant experience: $30–38/hr
- Highly experienced machine builder/automation technician: $38–45+/hr
