Certified Orientation & Mobility Specialist (COMS)
Location: Kent & Sussex County
Salary: To Be Determined by the Delaware Department of Education
Are you passionate about empowering individuals with visual impairments to live independently? Join our team as a Certified Orientation & Mobility Specialist (COMS) and make a meaningful impact by helping students safely navigate their homes, schools, workplaces, and communities.
As a COMS, you will conduct comprehensive assessments, provide individualized orientation and mobility instruction, and collaborate with families, educators, and multidisciplinary teams to support student success. You will also serve as a key member of Individualized Education Program (IEP) teams by developing goals, documenting student progress, and incorporating adaptive technologies, including GPS tools, when appropriate.
What You'll Do
- Conduct comprehensive orientation and mobility assessments.
- Provide one-on-one instruction in safe travel and independent navigation.
- Develop and implement individualized lesson plans based on students' visual needs.
- Maintain accurate records, monitor student progress, and prepare required reports.
- Participate in IEP and other educational planning meetings.
- Recommend and deliver adaptive equipment and assistive technology.
- Collaborate with schools, families, vocational rehabilitation staff, and community partners.
- Support students transitioning to post-secondary education, employment, and independent living.
- Refer students for additional vision-related services when appropriate.
Minimum Qualifications
- Six months of work experience, internship, and/or coursework as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist serving individuals with vision loss.
Selective Requirement (Required)
Applicants must be certified as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) through the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation & Education Professionals (ACVREP).
