Job Description

CNC Lathe Operator / Setup Machinist

Keep 11 CNC Lathes Running. Support the Team. Make an Impact.

Carlson Hydraulics is looking for a skilled CNC Lathe Operator who takes pride in keeping machines running, producing quality parts, and supporting the success of the entire shop.

Our operation includes 11 CNC lathes and 6 CNC mills, and while this position is focused primarily on our lathe department, we succeed as a team. The ideal candidate understands that keeping production moving sometimes means helping prepare jobs, assisting with setups, troubleshooting issues, or supporting other areas of the machine shop when needed.

If you're the kind of machinist who notices downtime before anyone else, enjoys solving problems, and takes ownership of shop performance—not just your machine—we want to talk with you.

What Makes This Role Different?

This isn't a "run one machine all day" job.

Our shop is built around teamwork, efficiency, and flexibility. Operators often oversee multiple machines, help with changeovers, prepare upcoming jobs, and work together to maximize uptime across the shop. With 11 CNC lathes and 6 CNC mills running daily, everyone contributes to maintaining workflow and meeting customer commitments.

You'll primarily work with CNC lathes, but you'll be part of a team that supports overall shop productivity wherever needed.

Then in the responsibilities section add:

  • Primarily set up and operate CNC lathes, including live-tooling and Y-axis machines
  • Work with teammates to maximize uptime across 11 CNC lathes and 6 CNC mills
  • Assist with setup preparation, tooling, material staging, and other shop needs as workload requires
  • Support cross-training and continuous improvement efforts throughout the shop
  • Help maintain efficient workflow between the lathe and mill departments

And in What We're Looking For, add:

  • Team-first mentality with a willingness to help wherever needed
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced machine shop
  • Interest in learning additional equipment and processes beyond primary lathe responsibilities
