Job Title: Phlebotomist

Job Description

This Phlebotomist role focuses on performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collection while supporting smooth laboratory operations in a fast-paced environment. You will collect, process, and manage patient specimens, ensure accurate labeling and documentation, and contribute to a safe, compliant, and patient-centered experience for individuals across pediatric to geriatric age groups.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws (venipuncture) using straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring patient comfort and safety.
  • Collect and store blood and other specimens (such as urine or fecal samples) according to established procedures and protocols.
  • Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and cooperation.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accurate association of patient information and test orders.
  • Label specimens accurately and completely, verifying all information against test requisitions or computer-generated labels to ensure 100% accuracy.
  • Centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and laboratory protocols.
  • Prepare and package specimens for transport, following all procedures necessary to maintain specimen integrity during transit.
  • Store specimen samples at the appropriate temperature and place them in the correct collection containers or tubes according to protocol.
  • Record maintenance data, perform decontamination tasks, and support overall laboratory cleanliness and safety.

Essential Skills

  • At least 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to draw and process specimens independently.
  • Proven experience performing blood draws on pediatric through geriatric patient populations.
  • Proficiency in venipuncture techniques using both straight needles and butterfly needles.
  • Experience with blood draws, specimen handling, sample preparation, and sample storage.
  • Ability to accurately label, manage, and store patient specimens in accordance with laboratory protocols.
  • Familiarity with centrifuges and related laboratory equipment used in specimen processing.
  • Competence in data entry and handling patient and specimen information accurately.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working in laboratory, blood bank, or biobank environments.
  • Background in medical assisting or related clinical support roles.
  • Familiarity with Cerner or similar electronic systems for laboratory or patient data.
  • Experience handling a variety of biological samples and patient specimens.
  • Comfort working with pediatric patients through geriatric patients, with a compassionate and patient-centered approach.
  • Phlebotomy certification is not required but related training or coursework is beneficial.

Work Environment

This role is based at a clinical location in Columbia City with a typical schedule of Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You will work in a fast-paced laboratory and clinical setting that involves frequent patient interaction and hands-on specimen collection and processing. The environment includes the use of laboratory equipment such as centrifuges and specimen storage units, as well as computer systems and software, including Microsoft Office and potentially Cerner or similar platforms. Safety and regulatory compliance are central to daily operations, with adherence to OSHA and DEP standards. The position may require travel between locations, and mileage and drive time are compensated when applicable. Professional attire appropriate for a clinical and laboratory setting is expected, along with compliance with any site-specific dress and safety requirements.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $22.24 - $26.00/hr.
