Job Title: Utility Technician
Job Description

The Utility Technician supports the fabrication and assembly of structural steel and piping components while assisting multiple skilled trades across the facility. In this role, you measure and cut steel, install supports and brackets, operate industrial equipment, and work closely with welders, electricians, and plumbers as an apprentice. You help install equipment according to engineering drawings and specifications and gain hands-on experience in welding, plumbing, and electrical work. This position offers broad exposure to many aspects of production and provides a strong foundation in multiple trades.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in fabricating and assembling structural steel and piping components according to engineering requirements.
  • Measure and cut steel using a band saw, plasma cutter, or oxy-acetylene torch in accordance with engineering cut sheets.
  • Install supports, brackets, and trolley beams to specified locations and tolerances.
  • Operate plate shears, industrial saws, and other power equipment and tools safely and efficiently.
  • Work as an apprentice alongside welders, electricians, and plumbers to support their daily tasks.
  • Help pull electrical wires, hang walls, assemble frames, and perform spot welding as directed.
  • Assist with installing various pieces of equipment in accordance with engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Perform tack welding on support beams and other components as needed, such as short weld beads on structural elements.
  • Support painting and finishing activities on structural and mechanical components when required.
  • Work with the electrical team on tasks such as pulling wire and assisting with conduit-related work under supervision.
  • Support plumbing activities, including helping to sweat copper piping and assemble piping systems under guidance.
  • Use hand and power tools for general construction, fabrication, and production tasks.
  • Follow safety procedures and common safety protocols in a manufacturing environment, including proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring tools and equipment are stored and used properly.
  • Collaborate with multiple trades to help build and assemble chiller systems and related equipment.
  • Participate in training opportunities within welding, plumbing, and electrical departments to build skills and familiarity with each trade.
Essential Skills
  • Experience in at least one trade such as construction, HVAC, electrical, or welding.
  • Strong knowledge of how to safely use power tools, including saws, drills, grinders, and similar equipment.
  • Basic understanding of welding processes and common weld shop tools.
  • Experience performing general labor tasks in a construction, production, or manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with hand tools and their proper use in fabrication and assembly work.
  • Ability and willingness to learn about electrical wiring and conduit-related tasks.
  • Ability to speak about and demonstrate a strong personal safety record.
  • Understanding of common safety protocols in a manufacturing environment, including safe tool and equipment operation.
  • Capability to operate plate shears, industrial saws, and other power equipment after appropriate training.
  • Physical ability to lift and move up to 35 pounds as needed for job tasks.
  • Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch for extended periods as required by the work.
  • Ability to climb portable ladders safely to perform tasks at various heights.
  • Good manual dexterity and multi-limb coordination to handle tools, materials, and equipment effectively.
  • Willingness to use required personal protective equipment at all times.

Work Environment

The role is based in a manufacturing and fabrication environment where you work closely with welding, plumbing, and electrical teams to build chiller systems and related equipment. Personal Protective Equipment is required and provided, and safety protocols are an integral part of daily operations. Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $25.00/hr.
