The Utility Laborer supports a utility construction team on commercial projects by performing physically demanding tasks related to installing and maintaining underground utility lines for electrical, gas, and water services. This role involves trench digging, safe exposure of existing utilities, and assisting with pipe and cable installation while working closely with equipment operators to ensure safe and efficient operations.
Responsibilities
- Dig trenches for underground utility lines, including electrical, gas, and water, following project specifications and safety standards.
- Perform physical hand-digging, grading, and shoring to prepare and stabilize excavation areas.
- Safely expose existing utility crossings to prevent damage during heavy equipment operations.
- Assist with laying underground pipes and setting hand-holes in accordance with utility construction requirements.
- Support cable pulling activities for underground utility installations.
- Backfill and compact trenches after installation using appropriate tools and methods.
- Utilize hand and power tools such as jackhammers, saws, and tampers to complete construction tasks.
- Transport materials, tools, and equipment to and from the job site as needed.
- Work closely with construction laborers and equipment operators to coordinate tasks and maintain a safe work area.
- Follow all site safety procedures and guidelines while working on commercial construction projects.
- Experience in utility construction and trench digging in a commercial construction environment.
- Ability to perform physically demanding construction labor, including hand-digging, grading, and shoring.
- Knowledge of safe practices for exposing existing utility crossings around heavy equipment.
- Ability to assist with laying underground pipes, setting hand-holes, pulling cable, and backfilling trenches.
- Proficiency in using hand and power tools such as jackhammers, saws, and tampers.
- Capability to work effectively as part of a utility construction team with laborers and equipment operators.
- Prior experience as a construction laborer on commercial projects.
- Familiarity with heavy equipment operations and working safely around machinery.
- Ability to transport and organize materials, tools, and equipment on the job site.
- Strong awareness of job site safety procedures and willingness to follow all guidelines.

Work Environment

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $20.00 - $24.00/hr.
