Overview

Granular Mechanics and Regolith Operations Engineer

LOCATION: Cape Canaveral, FL

JOB STATUS: Full-time

CLEARANCE: BI investigation

TRAVEL: Limited; as needed

ASTRION is seeking an on-site engineer to support the Granular Mechanics and Regolith Operations lab within Swampworks at NASA-KSC.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS:

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, Materials Science, Space Systems or a closely related engineering or physical science discipline.
  • Experience in the design, control, and testing of robotic hardware and software systems.
  • Experience in mechanical assembly and electrical design and fabrication.
  • Experience in LabView, Kicad EDA, and git version control systems.
  • Experience reading electrical datasheets.
  • Knowledge of microcontrollers and communication buses (i2c, CAN, SPI, etc.).
  • PCB design and layout, and electrical component selection experience.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS:

  • Experience working within KSC labs.
  • Experience working with KSC lab procedures and regulations.
  • Experience with load switches, Linux / Yocto, firmware dev, power electronics, battery powered system design.
  • Experience with lunar regolith technologies.
  • Experience in granular mechanics or regolith/soil behavior.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful applicant will support the Infrastructure Pilot Excavator (IPEx) project to mine and transport lunar regolith crucial for future lunar missions in In-Situ Resource Utilization processes. The successful applicant shall help design and test mechanical, software, and control systems, develop test plans, provide engineering solutions for tests in simulated lunar environments, process data, report findings to project Principal Investigators, and support publication to peer reviewed journals. Applicants are expected to have significant experience in lunar surface system research including a strong understanding of granular mechanics fundaments and how IPEx is an indispensable tool to NASA missions and objectives.
