Position Overview
The Ophthalmic Technician performs a variety of clinical and diagnostic testing activities to assist our physicians and medical office personnel. In this role, you will be the backbone of patient flow, gathering critical ophthalmic data, performing advanced diagnostics, and ensuring our patients feel comfortable and informed throughout their visit.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical & Diagnostic Testing
- Perform comprehensive diagnostic testing including, but not limited to: Auto-refraction, topography, applanation tonometry, visual fields, fundus photography, IOL Master, OCT, lensometry, manual refractions, and drop instillation.
- Conduct contact lens fittings, including patient instruction on insertion and removal.
- Assist with LASIK pre-operative evaluations and screenings.
Patient Care & Communication
- Greet patients and visitors promptly, courteously, and helpfully to manage and optimize daily patient flow.
- Obtain accurate ophthalmic and medical histories and conduct visual acuity testing according to established guidelines. Accuracy and efficiency is paramount.
- Provide thorough pre-operative and post-operative patient education.
- Triage patient phone calls, determining the appropriate level of urgency and follow-up care.
- Demonstrate exceptional care and empathy for patients of all ages, with a strong emphasis on geriatric patient care.
Documentation & Operations
- Review patient charts and meticulously document all test and examination results.
- Call in prescription refills to pharmacies under the direct guidance of the physician(s).
- Maintain a clean, organized, and compliant clinical environment (cleaning exam rooms, sanitizing equipment, and stocking supplies).
- Monitor medication and supply expiration dates, handling replenishments in accordance with practice policies.
- Maintain strict patient confidentiality (HIPAA compliance) and adhere to all safety protocols.
Minimum Job Requirements
- Education: High School diploma or Graduation Equivalency Degree (GED) required.
- Experience: A minimum of three (3) years of certified ophthalmic technician experience is required.
- Skills: Proficiency with advanced ophthalmic diagnostic equipment, electronic health records (EHR), and a strong foundational knowledge of LASIK/refractive surgery workflows.
