About This Role

Perform a variety of tasks at childcare institutions to ensure the well-being of children. This includes attending to their needs, developing their social and emotional skills, and creating a safe and engaging environment for play and learning.



What You'll Do

  • Care for children in institutional settings, such as group homes, nursery schools, private businesses, or schools for the handicapped, and provide emotional support to help them develop positive self-concepts.
  • Sanitize toys and play equipment to maintain a clean and safe environment, and encourage children to pick up after themselves and develop good habits.
  • Identify signs of emotional or developmental problems in children and report them to parents or guardians, and keep detailed records of individual children's activities, meals, and medications.
  • Teach children health and personal habits, such as eating, resting, and toilet habits, and read to them and engage them in simple activities like painting, drawing, and singing.
  • Organize and store toys and materials to maintain order in activity areas, and perform housekeeping duties such as laundry, cleaning, and changing of linens.
  • Accompany children to and from school, on outings, and to medical appointments, and dress them and change their diapers as needed.
  • Help children with homework and school work, and create developmentally appropriate lesson plans to engage them in learning.
  • Perform general administrative tasks, such as taking attendance, editing internal paperwork, and making phone calls, and maintain a safe play environment by supervising children and responding to emergencies.
  • Organize and participate in recreational activities and outings, such as games and field trips, and provide care for mentally disturbed, delinquent, or handicapped children.
  • Regulate children's rest periods, and assist in preparing food and serving meals and refreshments to children.
  • Provide individualized attention to children and respond to their unique needs and behaviors, and communicate regularly with parents or guardians about daily activities and issues.
  • Support children's emotional and social development by encouraging understanding of others and positive self-concepts, and provide care for children in a variety of settings, including childcare centers and private homes.
  • Observe and monitor children's play activities, and instruct them in daily living skills, such as toileting and washing hands.
  • Take attendance and maintain accurate records of children's attendance, and perform general personnel functions, such as supervision, training, and scheduling.

  • Prepare foods or meals, and assist in serving meals and refreshments to children.
  • Teach daily living skills or behaviors, such as bathing and dressing.
