In this specialized role, you will work directly alongside our Mohs Surgeon during multi-stage skin cancer surgeries, reconstructions, and repairs. You will manage the high-velocity workflow of the surgical day, coordinate between patients and the pathology lab, and deliver exceptional surgical care. The ideal candidate has deep experience in a sterile field environment and thrives in a fast-paced, high-volume surgical clinic.

Core Responsibilities
Surgical & Clinical Duties
- First Assisting: Act as the primary surgical first assist to the Mohs Surgeon during tumor excisions, tissue layer removals, and complex reconstructions.
- Sterile Field Management: Set up sterile surgical trays, prep patient surgical sites, and maintain strict aseptic technique throughout the day.
- Hemostasis & Bandaging: Assist with surgical hemostasis (electrosurgical units/cautery) and apply precision surgical pressure dressings.
- Tissue Coordination: Properly gross, label, log, and map surgical tissue specimens to hand off immediately to the on-site histology lab technician.
- Patient Scribing: Accurately document surgical margins, stage depths, defect measurements, and closure types in the EHR system in real-time.
- Wound Care & Education: Provide intensive pre- and post-operative instructions, explain emergency bleeding protocols, and handle suture removal visits.
- Instrument Sterilization: Clean, package, and autoclave surgical instruments, ensuring rapid turnover of specialized surgical packs.
- Biopsy Verification: Review and verify previous pathology reports and surgical site markings prior to the patient entering the operating suite.
- Quick Onboarding: Step into the clinic on Tuesdays and Wednesdays with immediate focus, seamlessly blending with the existing core clinical team.
- Post-Op Documentation: Scan and log pathology maps and final reconstruction tracking documents into the patient's electronic medical chart.
Required Education & Certifications
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
- Training: Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program.
- Certification: Active Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) credential.
- Life Support: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification.
- Mohs Experience: Minimum of 1–2 years of dedicated experience in Mohs micrographic surgery or high-volume dermatologic surgery is highly preferred.
- Sterile Technique: Expert knowledge of sterile techniques, surgical instrumentation, and local anesthesia protocols.
- EHR Software: Proficiency with dermatology EHR software (specifically EMA/Modernizing Medicine or Nextech).
- Speed & Stamina: Ability to handle high patient volumes and remain focused during prolonged multi-stage surgical procedures.
- Attributes: Exceptional manual dexterity, a steady hand, strong focus under pressure, and a calm, comforting bedside manner for anxious surgical patients.
- Ability to stand for long periods of time at the surgical table.
- Excellent visual acuity to assist with delicate surgical closures under bright OR lighting.
- Fine motor skills to handle small surgical needles, sutures, scalpel blades, and delicate instruments safely.
