Senior Restoration Designer (Native Plants)

POSITION: Senior Restoration Designer
STATUS: Full-Time, Salaried, Exempt
REPORTS TO: Director of Design
SALARY: $85,000-$105,000
SUMMARY OF THE POSITION
The Senior Restoration Designer works closely and collaboratively with senior staff and design staff to design projects that achieve client goals and priorities, meet regulatory requirements, and are consistent with WED's Mission Statement. S/he is responsible for managing and mentoring design staff in the development of the design strategies and the creation of documents required to successfully permit projects with local and state regulatory agencies. In collaboration with the project team, the Senior Restoration Designer presents technical aspects, ecological benefits and regulatory compliance of WED developed projects at local Conservation Commission public hearings. S/he will work closely with WED Project Managers during all phases of a project, particularly during the design and permitting stage and as the project transitions into construction. This position must apply a high level of technical expertise to ensure that the Design Department consistently produces a high quality of work in line with WED design standards.
Job functions include, but are not limited to the following:
  1. Essential Responsibilities
    • Works with WED design staff to develop project strategies within the parameters of the design/permitting contract that achieve client goals, meet regulatory requirements, and are consistent with WED's Mission Statement and guiding principles.
    • Works with WED staff and project team partners to set project objectives and schedule, and to track submittal deadlines for permitting applications of projects.
    • Directly supervises, delegates work to, and evaluates the performance of Design Staff including, but not limited to, Associated Restoration Designers.
    • Manages and provides design direction to design staff in the preparation of Land Management Plans, Restoration Plans, and related documentation for design development, permit applications, and construction purposes.
    • Ensures the timely and regular invoicing during projects' design and permitting stages.
    • Serves as a mentor to junior staff in the design department.
    • In conjunction with the Project Manager, maintains communication with clients and other consultants (engineers, landscape architects, etc.) during the design and permitting stages of a project.
    • Presents projects at regulatory meetings (primarily local-level Conservation Commission public hearings) as needed.
    • Ensures the timely development of estimates and proposals with design and estimating staff.
  • Advises senior staff of the day-to-day performance of design staff to provide recommendations on advancement or performance.
  1. Secondary Responsibilities
    • Prepares and/or oversees the creation of presentation and marketing graphics.
    • Drafts plans and documents for permitting submittals, as needed, such as Restoration Plans and Land Management Plans.
    • Oversees and refines the organization of the Design Department's electronic filing system and WED's design graphic standards.
    • Manages and ensures that WED Design Projects continue to be innovative and utilize the most up-to-date Best Management Practices
    • Collaborates with construction teams and conducts site visits to monitor implementation work progress with the objective of maintaining quality assurance.
  2. Perform other related functions, as determined by WED.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Job Requirements:
  • Master's degree in Landscape Architecture, Environmental Planning or related field preferred with at least three years of relevant design experience in ecological restoration, landscape design, or related field or Bachelor's degree in Landscape Architecture, Environmental Planning or related field preferred with at least five years of relevant design experience in ecological restoration, landscape design, or related field, or related experience.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, Rhino 3ds, and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Familiarity with Sage CRM and Sage CRE 300 preferred.
  • Familiarity with Sketch-up, ArcGIS, GPS helpful.
  • Team player with at least one-year experience as a mentor.
  • Highly organized with the proven ability to multi-task.
  • Detail oriented with well-developed time management skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work occasional evening and/or weekend hours.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Massachusetts Pesticide Applicators License, to be acquired within 6 months of hire.
  • This job will have occasional exposure to occupational hazards such tick-borne illness, biting and stinging insects, poison ivy and sumac.
