We are looking for an experienced Director of Finance to provide both strategic financial leadership and hands-on oversight for a mission-focused nonprofit in Salinas, California. This position will guide budgeting, reporting, compliance, and funding management while helping the organization strengthen long-term financial health. The role offers close partnership with executive leadership and board stakeholders, making it well suited for a finance leader who can connect day-to-day operations with broader organizational goals.


Responsibilities:

• Direct the organization’s financial planning activities, including annual budgeting, rolling forecasts, cash flow projections, and analysis of financial performance against targets.

• Oversee core accounting functions such as the monthly close process, general ledger accuracy, audit preparation, and timely production of financial statements.

• Administer financial oversight for grants, government agreements, and other public or private revenue sources, ensuring accurate tracking, reporting, and compliance.

• Work closely with senior leaders and board-level partners to inform strategic decisions, evaluate financial scenarios, and support sustainable growth.

• Build and refine management reports, dashboards, and analytical tools that provide clear insight into operational and financial results.

• Maintain strong internal controls and ensure finance practices align with nonprofit accounting standards and fund-based reporting principles.

• Lead, coach, and develop members of the finance team to strengthen performance, accountability, and career growth.

• Contribute directly to day-to-day finance and accounting work in a hands-on leadership capacity, stepping into operational details when needed.

• At least 7 years of progressive leadership experience in finance and accounting roles.
• Demonstrated background in nonprofit financial management and accounting operations.
• Experience working in healthcare, behavioral health, community health, or another highly regulated service setting is preferred.
• Proven ability to manage grants, government contracts, and funding from county or other public agencies.
• Strong command of annual budgeting, budget administration, month-end close, financial reporting, and cash flow forecasting.
• Knowledge of nonprofit compliance requirements, internal controls, and fund accounting practices is highly valued.
• Track record of leading teams effectively while fostering collaboration and staff development.
• Strong communication and executive-level partnering skills, with the ability to work effectively with senior leadership and board stakeholders.
