MFM Ultrasound Technologist Principal (Lead)

The Principal Ultrasound Technologist provides technical knowledge and/or coordinates the delivery of US Services. As the Principal Ultrasound Technologist, the incumbent will be responsible for patient coordination, acquisition, processing, and archiving of all patient data. This position is responsible for performing ultrasound examinations, teaching ultrasound technologists, participating in quality assurance and process improvement efforts, providing intraoperative ultrasound support, and protocol management.

Under the direction of a qualified physician, the Principal Ultrasound Technologist competently performs routine and specialized ultrasound exams of varied complexity to produce quality images for physicians and other health care providers to diagnose, treat, and monitor disease processes. Works independently, exercising sound judgment, and executing developed clinical skills on challenging diagnostic procedures and situations to deliver accurate results in a timely manner. Work routines are guided by established procedures and protocols; quality of work performed is approved or reviewed by the shift supervisor, manager, or appropriate radiologist.

This position will be designated as an advanced user in EPIC, PACS (Visage), Clickview and Radiology Information System. The Principal Ultrasound Tech will train new staff as well as educate all staff about new technologies. The Principal Ultrasound Tech will maintain and operate equipment according to manufacturers' specifications, reporting all problems appropriately. All duties and responsibilities will be performed calmly in stressful situations and interact with radiologists, clinicians and peers in a cooperative, harmonious manner for maximum effectiveness. Incumbent must be able to perform all job functions assigned by the Department of Radiology - Ultrasound.

Incumbent may be required to oversee provision of US services and staffing coverage in absence of the supervisor. The Principal Ultrasound Technologist will comply and adhere to department protocols, UCDH Policies and Procedures, Department of Radiology Policies and Procedures and other applicable work rules and regulations. The technologist must act with initiative and responsibility to achieve maximum quality. Duties will be performed independently and under general supervision.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

• American Registration for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) certification with applicable credential [e.g., Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS), Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS), Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT, etc.], or equivalent certification
• ARDMS in OB/GYN

• American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR

• Several years of relevant experience required
• Capably demonstrates the knowledge and ability to operate ultrasound equipment in order to produce a quality product.
• Knowledge of principles of ultrasound physics, and the propagation of ultrasound through tissues.
• Demonstrate ability to recognize normal human anatomy, certain pathological conditions, and the ability to utilize ultrasound equipment to differentiate disease processes and artifacts.
• Knowledge of anatomy, physiology and congenital/acquired pathology as they relate to the use and interpretation of ultrasound diagnostic procedures.
• Ability to perform detailed and complex ultrasounds on a varied patient population.
• Knowledge of standard keyboard, ability to input/retrieve data accurately and to observe applicable Radiology Information System (RIS) and Information Services (IS) access codes, security and patient privacy.
• Comprehensive working knowledge of, and skill to apply, practices, principles and techniques of patient care related to area of expertise.
• Expert ability to operate Epic, Visage, ClickView, Excel, Word and other patient care management systems for documentation activities and report generation.
• Must be able to adapt to new programs and equipment upgrades as radiological field advances.
• Physical ability to capably perform all functions of a staff sonographer.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with complex anatomic ultrasound (level II studies), Doppler, multiples, nuchal translucency and ultrasound guidance for amniocentesis preferred.
• Interest in further training in prenatal fetal surgery (Laser therapy, MMC repair) and guidance for chorionic chronic villi sampling preferred.
• Knowledge of UCDH hospital and departmental policies and procedures sufficient to effectively perform job functions or refer to others.

The Department of Radiology is a 24-hour, seven day a week operation providing Imaging Services to adult and pediatric inpatient and outpatients. The Ultrasound section of Radiology performs a variety of diagnostic and interventional ultrasound exams for diagnosis of disease processes.
