Repair Technician – Grand Forks, ND & Erskine, MNPosition Overview

As a Repair Technician, you’ll be a key contributor in the requalification and recertification of railcars, ensuring they operate safely, reliably, and efficiently. This role is hands‑on, mechanically challenging, and ideal for individuals who enjoy working with heavy equipment, steel fabrication, and precision mechanical systems. You’ll join a highly audited, well‑maintained industrial environment where craftsmanship, safety, and teamwork matter every day.

What You’ll Do
  • Mechanical Repairs — Diagnose, repair, and replace critical railcar components including brake assemblies, shoes, uncoupling levers, gaskets, air hoses, train lines, couplers, draft gears, and yokes.
  • Brake System Work — Repair and replace braking systems, springs, shocks, and related assemblies.
  • Structural Restoration — Straighten, repair, or replace side posts, rafters, crossties, panels, piping, grab irons, handholds, and still steps.
  • Fabrication & Welding — Use welding torches, electric welders, plasma cutters, impact wrenches, hydraulic bolt fasteners, pneumatic tools, and hand tools to cut, burn, weld, and fabricate steel components.
  • Precision Assembly — Install, align, torque, and secure railcar and tank car components such as ladders, handrails, brake systems, and mechanical assemblies according to detailed specifications and drawings.
  • Component Removal — Safely remove damaged or worn parts and assist with disassembly during repair operations.
  • Shop Support — Assist with material handling, cleaning, welding prep, and general shop operations.
  • Finishing Work — Stencil railcars, prepare surfaces for painting, and complete finishing tasks to meet quality standards.
  • Air Brake Maintenance — Maintain, repair, and replace air brake pipes, valves, fittings, and related components.
  • Pressure Testing — Conduct pressure tests to verify the integrity and safety of completed repairs.
Essential Skills
  • Mechanical assembly
  • Comfortable with hand and power tools
  • Able to read a tape measure
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
Qualifications
  • MUST BE: Comfortable with hand and power tools
  • MUST HAVE: Mechanical Experience
  • MUST BE: Able to read a tape measure.
  • Welding/Fabrication experience preferred but not required
  • Plumbing experienced preferred but not required
Work Environment

You’ll work in a clean, well‑maintained industrial facility with continuous audits and high safety standards. The role involves working around large tanker cars, bending, climbing, and performing tasks on catwalks.

Schedule:

  • Monday–Thursday: 6:30 AM – 5:00 PM
  • Most Fridays optional; mandatory Friday work communicated in advance

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $29.00/hr.
