Position Summary

The Orthotist/Prosthetist is a healthcare professional specializing in the evaluation, design, fabrication, fitting, and maintenance of orthotic and prosthetic devices to improve the mobility, comfort, and quality of life for patients with musculoskeletal impairments or limb loss. This role involves direct patient care, technical expertise, and collaboration with physicians, therapists, and other members of the rehabilitation team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Patient Assessment

    • Evaluate patients through clinical examination, gait analysis, and review of medical history.

    • Determine patient needs in consultation with referring physicians and healthcare providers.

  • Design & Fabrication

    • Design custom orthotic and prosthetic devices using advanced materials and technologies.

    • Take accurate measurements, molds, and digital scans for device creation.

    • Collaborate with fabrication technicians to ensure proper assembly and quality.

  • Fitting & Adjustment

    • Fit devices to patients, ensuring optimal function, comfort, and cosmetic appearance.

    • Make necessary modifications for improved performance and patient satisfaction.

    • Provide instructions on proper use, care, and maintenance.

  • Follow-Up Care

    • Monitor patient progress and device effectiveness over time.

    • Adjust or repair devices as needed to accommodate changes in condition or activity level.

  • Documentation & Compliance

    • Maintain detailed patient records in accordance with HIPAA and applicable regulations.

    • Ensure devices meet medical, ethical, and safety standards.

Qualifications

  • Education:

    • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orthotics and Prosthetics from an accredited program.

  • Licensure/Certification:

    • Board certification by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics & Pedorthics (ABC) or equivalent.

    • State licensure where required.

  • Experience:

    • Minimum 1–3 years of clinical experience preferred.

  • Skills:

    • Strong patient care and communication skills.

    • Proficiency in modern fabrication techniques and CAD/CAM technology.

    • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

Work Environment

  • Hospitals, rehabilitation centers, specialty clinics, or private practices.

  • May require occasional travel for patient fittings or follow-up care.
