We are seeking an experienced HR Director – Employee Relations & Risk Management to provide strategic leadership for employee relations, workplace compliance, and employment risk across our organization.

This is a high-impact leadership role responsible for guiding facilities through complex employee relations matters, ensuring consistent application of employment policies, and minimizing organizational risk. This position is not responsible for recruiting or talent acquisition.

Position Summary

The HR Director – Employee Relations & Risk Management serves as the organization's subject matter expert for employee relations, workplace investigations, employment law compliance, leave administration, and workforce risk management. Working closely with facility leadership, legal counsel, and executive leadership, this individual ensures employment decisions are legally compliant, well-documented, and aligned with organizational policies and best practices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic guidance to facility leadership on employee relations matters, including performance management, corrective action, disciplinary processes, and terminations.

  • Serve as the primary resource for complex employment decisions, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws.

  • Lead and oversee workplace investigations from intake through resolution, ensuring thorough documentation, objective findings, and timely closure.

  • Manage employee leave programs, including Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accommodations, and other protected leave requests.

  • Oversee unemployment claims and coordinate workers' compensation matters in partnership with facility leadership and third-party administrators.

  • Conduct HR compliance audits to ensure personnel records, documentation, and employment practices meet regulatory and organizational standards.

  • Develop and deliver training for administrators, directors, and managers on employee relations, documentation, policy application, and legal compliance.

  • Partner with executive leadership and legal counsel on high-risk employment matters and proactively identify opportunities to reduce organizational liability.

  • Monitor employment law developments and recommend policy and procedural updates to maintain compliance and support operational excellence.

  • Promote a culture of accountability, professionalism, and consistency across all facilities.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field required; Master's degree preferred.

  • Minimum of seven (7) years of progressive Human Resources experience with significant responsibility for employee relations, workplace investigations, and employment law compliance.

  • Healthcare, skilled nursing, long-term care, or multi-site healthcare experience strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated expertise in conducting workplace investigations and managing complex employee relations issues.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of federal and state employment laws, including FMLA, ADA, Title VII, FLSA, and wage and hour regulations; North Carolina employment law experience preferred.

  • Experience managing unemployment claims and coordinating workers' compensation programs.

  • Strong analytical, communication, conflict resolution, and decision-making skills.

  • Ability to manage sensitive and confidential matters with professionalism, sound judgment, and discretion.

  • Professional HR certification such as PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP is strongly preferred.
