Material Handler
Job Description
This role focuses on safely and efficiently handling specialty steel materials in a busy production environment. You locate, move, stage, and return materials using forklifts, side loaders, overhead cranes, and other material handling equipment, while maintaining accurate documentation and inventory records on a 2nd shift schedule.
Responsibilities
- Locate and stage steel materials according to production and shipping requirements.
- Operate sit-down forklifts to move and transport materials throughout the facility.
- Use side loaders to handle long or specialized loads as needed.
- Operate overhead cranes to safely lift and move all materials over 35 pounds.
- Accurately complete required worksheets and work orders for each job.
- Label materials correctly and return them to their designated storage locations.
- Perform picking and inventory tasks to support production and shipping operations.
- Utilize pallet jacks and other material handling tools to move products as required.
- Support shipping and receiving activities by loading, unloading, and organizing materials.
- Follow all safety procedures and guidelines in a metals processing environment.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and well-structured work area.
- Work a 2nd shift schedule from 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. and maintain reliable attendance.
Essential Skills
- 3–5 years of forklift experience, with sit-down forklift operation strongly preferred.
- At least 2 years of material handling experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Proven experience with general material handling, staging, and production support.
- Ability to operate sit-down forklifts safely and efficiently.
- Experience with inventory, picking, and basic shipping and receiving tasks.
- Familiarity with pallet jack operation and general warehouse equipment.
- Experience using warehouse management software; SAP experience preferred.
- Strong attitude, drive, and attendance, demonstrating reliability and commitment (ADA: Attitude, Drive, Attendance).
- Ability to accurately complete work orders, worksheets, and labeling tasks.
- Capability to work safely around overhead cranes, side loaders, and heavy materials.
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Carol Stream, IL.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $18.00 - $19.00/hr.
