The Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee with the Department of Transportation offers an exciting path to build valuable hands-on skills. This role supports the maintenance and repair of diesel and construction equipment while building strong mechanical and safety skills. As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee, you will perform the following duties:
- Equipment Repair: Assist with repairing and overhauling cars, trucks, and heavy equipment while learning to replace parts and perform diagnostics
- Preventative Maintenance: Participate in routine servicing of vehicles and equipment to support safe and reliable operation
- Mechanical Diagnostics: Help complete tune-ups, component repairs, and system adjustments across engine, electrical, and cooling systems
- Inspection Support: Take part in safety and emissions inspection activities and complete required records and forms
- Safety Practices: Follow proper safety procedures, maintain a clean work area, and learn hazard identification and prevention techniques
- Field Adjustments: Perform basic field adjustments and support major repair activities alongside experienced staff
Work Schedule and Additional Information:
- Full-time employment
- Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
- Dual shifts for winter will be; 4:00 AM to 12:00 PM or 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM, overtime, and travel may be required. Work hours subject to seasonal change.
- Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
- Two years as a Tradesman Helper (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration) working in the automotive field; or
- Graduation from a post-high school diesel technology curriculum of an accredited trade or technical school; or
- An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Special Requirements:
- This position requires employees to possess an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver Learner's Permit or License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission Restriction (E) removed on the first day of employment.
- This position requires employees to possess an active Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations on the first day of employment.
- This position requires employees to obtain a valid Pennsylvania Class 1, 4 or 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification during the probationary period.
- This position requires employees to pass the Department of Transportation's New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.
Additional Requirement:
- This position requires operation of vehicles or equipment with a manual transmission within the six-month probationary period.
- This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
- You must be able to perform essential job functions.
- Possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver Learner's Permit with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission Restriction (E) removed, or equivalent.
- Possession of an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N).
