Tool Maker (Levels 1, 2 & 3) – 1st Shift
Location: Macomb, MI
Shift: 1st Shift | 7:00 AM Start
Pay:
- Tool Builder I: $25.00–$30.00/hr (2+ years of experience)
- Tool Builder II: $34.00–$38.00/hr (3+ years of experience)
- Tool Builder III: $34.00–$45.00/hr (5+ years of experience)
Job Overview:
We are seeking skilled Tool Builders to join our team supporting the manufacturing of aerospace tooling and assemblies. In this role, you will build, repair, modify, and assemble precision jigs, fixtures, templates, forms, and other tooling used in aircraft manufacturing. Candidates should be comfortable working from blueprints, sketches, and engineering specifications while using a variety of manual and machine shop equipment.
Level II and III candidates will be expected to work independently on complex tooling projects from start to finish, while Level III Tool Builders may also assist in leading and mentoring junior team members.
Responsibilities:
- Build, fabricate, assemble, modify, and repair precision tooling, fixtures, jigs, templates, and forms.
- Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, MBD models, and GD&T specifications.
- Set up and operate manual machine shop equipment including lathes, Bridgeport mills, surface grinders, and similar machinery.
- Utilize precision measuring equipment including micrometers, calipers, height gauges, and other inspection tools.
- Machine, grind, deburr, and finish components to required specifications.
- Work with materials including aluminum, steel, graphite, and other tooling materials.
- Safely operate cranes, forklifts, and other material handling equipment.
- Maintain accurate job time and production records.
- Follow all company safety procedures and quality standards.
- Assist other team members and perform additional duties as assigned.
- Level III: Mentor Tool Builder I & II employees and provide technical guidance. One opening also requires troubleshooting controls and electrical systems.
Qualifications:
Tool Builder I
- 2+ years of manufacturing or tool building experience.
- Experience operating manual machine shop equipment.
- Experience using precision measuring instruments.
- Ability to read blueprints.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and basic math skills.
Tool Builder II
- 3+ years of tool building or machining experience.
- Experience setting up and operating lathes, Bridgeport mills, surface grinders, and related equipment.
- Strong blueprint reading and GD&T interpretation skills.
- Ability to independently complete tooling projects with minimal supervision.
Tool Builder III
- 5+ years of Tool Builder experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Advanced experience operating manual machining equipment.
- Strong understanding of GD&T, blueprints, and customer specifications.
- Ability to complete complex tooling projects from concept through completion.
- Experience mentoring or assisting less experienced tool builders.
- One Level III opening requires controls troubleshooting experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Aerospace, tooling, or precision manufacturing experience.
- Experience preparing fabrication or machining instructions.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Willingness to work overtime or weekends as needed.
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
