Job Description

The Service Technician inspects, tests, repairs, and maintains gas appliances, equipment, and related systems at customer locations. This role combines hands-on technical work with customer service, emergency response, safe driving, and adherence to regulatory and safety standards. The technician diagnoses issues using specialized tools, performs corrective repairs, responds to gas-related emergencies, and completes necessary administrative and reporting tasks while consistently promoting safety and courteous service.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect and test appliances, equipment, and associated gas systems at customer premises to identify performance issues, safety concerns, or needed repairs.
  • Check high-pressure service for dust, water, or blockages and determine appropriate corrective actions.
  • Discuss major repairs, parts requirements, and associated costs with customers using established parts pricing manuals and current labor rates, and initiate necessary service tags or documentation.
  • Use human senses, leak-detecting solutions, and gas detection or measurement equipment such as leak detectors, manometers, and pressure gauges to locate and diagnose problems.
  • Perform repairs by cleaning, adjusting, repairing, changing, or replacing burners, pilot lights, controls, flues, gas cocks, valves, house and appliance regulators, meters, and any other components or electronic devices related to appliance and system operation.
  • Verify that problems have been corrected by re-testing systems using leak-detecting solutions and gas detection or measurement equipment including leak detectors, manometers, and pressure gauges.
  • Lock, unlock, read, change, and remove meters as required, and initiate plugged service when necessary.
  • Deliver gas cylinders as directed and ensure proper handling, documentation, and safety procedures.
  • Investigate high bill complaints, determine possible causes, and complete service orders detailing the work performed and findings.
  • Collect payments on cash-on-delivery orders and plug meter orders, accurately account for all revenues collected, and promptly deliver funds to the designated employee.
  • Act as a first responder in gas-related situations such as fires, leaks, broken pipes, or explosions, performing necessary emergency repairs and applying stoppers when required.
  • Direct personnel at emergency sites, coordinate activities, and remain on-site when necessary until properly relieved by appropriate personnel.
  • Provide courteous, tactful, and professional customer service at all times when interacting with customers and the public.
  • Advise and instruct consumers on the proper and efficient operation of their appliances and equipment to promote safe use and optimal performance.
  • Drive a service truck safely and maintain required truck supplies, tools, and equipment in good working order.
  • Perform clerical and administrative duties such as preparing service reports, documenting work performed, and inputting data into computer systems.
  • Work in a safe and responsible manner, complying with all safety rules, regulations, and practices in effect, and enforcing them when required.
  • Actively support and promote safety, safe work habits, and good housekeeping, including reporting unsafe conditions or acts and rectifying them when qualified to do so.
  • Maintain all Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) training on a current basis and apply this knowledge in daily work.
  • Perform duties as Installer I/C, Tank Truck Driver, Cylinder Driver, or Meter Reader when required, demonstrating flexibility and competency across related roles.
  • Carry out related work as required or directed, adapting to changing operational needs.
  • Perform all other related duties as instructed by supervisory personnel.

Essential Skills

  • Strong mechanical skills with the ability to install, repair, test, and adjust gas appliances, equipment, and systems.
  • Electrical skills sufficient to work safely and effectively with appliance controls and related systems.
  • At least four years of successful and progressive experience in gas service work, including a minimum of two years as a Service Technician III, or equivalent experience demonstrating exceptional ability to perform the duties of a Service Technician II.
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose gas appliance and system issues using leak detectors, manometers, pressure gauges, and leak-detecting solutions.
  • Proven track record of dealing tactfully and courteously with customers and the public.
  • Very good working knowledge of departmental operating rules and procedures, relevant codes such as NFPA 58 and NFPA 59, and applicable regulations and standards.
  • Strong understanding of safety rules, regulations, and practices specific to gas service work and related trades.
  • High proficiency in the proper use of tools, materials, and equipment associated with gas appliance and system service.
  • Safe and competent driving skills, with thorough knowledge of traffic laws and a clean driving record.
  • Ability to use a computer for data entry, report preparation, and other administrative tasks.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Preferably a high school graduate with technical schooling or equivalent technical education.
  • Completion of all required Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal and State courses or programs relevant to the role.
  • Completion of OSHA Federal and State safety courses or programs applicable to gas service work.
  • Completion of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) courses or programs, including familiarity with NFPA 58 and NFPA 59.
  • Ability to maintain at least minimum passing scores, as required by regulations, for all recurring Federal, State, and NFPA courses or programs.
  • Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Hazardous Materials endorsement and no restrictions on air brakes or transmission type.
  • Valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with 49 CFR 391.41 through 391.49.
  • Appropriate clearance certifications such as a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), as required.
  • Satisfactory completion of in-house Service Technician training and field evaluation, with successful completion of continuing refresher courses.
  • Qualification in all phases of the work described for this role, demonstrating broad technical competency.
  • Good safety record, reflecting consistent adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
  • Ability to perform duties as Installer I/C, Tank Truck Driver, Cylinder Driver, or Meter Reader when needed.
