Facilities Maintenance Technician
Department of Public Works
The City of Portage is looking for a mechanically inclined, independent, self-motivated Facilities Maintenance Technician to join our Public Works Department!
What You'll Do:
- Work independently to monitor and maintain the heating and ventilation equipment, electrical, mechanical and structural conditions of the city buildings, including custodial work and immediate grounds.
- Inspect and ensure that all building service vendors are providing complete and quality service in accordance with existing contracts, including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, exterior maintenance and custodial. Irregularities and problems must be resolved by assisting in troubleshooting, communicating with immediate supervisor and/or coordinating repair efforts with contractors.
- Maintain a safe, inviting, and clean atmosphere for buildings, both internally and externally as seasons require. Areas of responsibilities may include the City Manager's Office, all meeting areas, public lobbies, restrooms, and public access offices.
- Paint and restore carpentry, change light bulbs, and make minor electrical and plumbing repairs as required. Monitor roof drainage systems, taking corrective measures as needed.
- Monitor City Hall, landscaping, irrigation, and grounds maintenance for adequate preservation and perform necessary repairs and adjustments.
- Develop and implement preventive maintenance procedures and maintain records of maintenance performed for assigned buildings.
- Generate purchase order requests as needed. Work with vendors to obtain quotes and place requests for services.
- Shovel sidewalks and spread ice-control material as necessary.
- Inspect city facilities grounds for litter and debris and remove such as required.
- Perform regular inspections on the emergency stand-by generator and monthly fire extinguisher checks for assigned buildings.
- Comply with all safety procedures and requirements and maintain compliance with City, County, and State ordinances/codes.
What We're Looking For:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- One to three years maintenance or other related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid State of Michigan Driver’s License.
- Mechanical ability and understanding of basic building systems.
- Proficient with various computer programs and current electronic devices.
- Operate a variety of equipment including power saws, power sanders, drills, paint sprayers, plumbing snakes and rodders, routers and grinders.
- Determine quantity and types of supplies, materials, tools and equipment needed for maintenance programs and projects; arrange for purchase and procurement of same.
- Assure that maintenance equipment and tools are kept in good working order.
- Read and interpret sketches, diagrams, drawings, and blueprints.
- Ability to familiarize self with department policies and procedures.
- Maintain time, material and equipment use records.
- Ability to troubleshoot, maintain, and repair the City’s lock system.
- Perform work in emergencies, including but not limited to work scheduled to be performed after regular hours and/or on call.
- Ability to pass a drug/alcohol screening, background and driver’s license check.
