Job Description
Remote / very hybrid role available in Morris County, NJ! An established, well-funded nonprofit organization is seeking a hands-on Controller to partner with the CFO and oversee accounting operations, financial reporting, close, internal controls, and annual audit preparation. The Controller will play a central role in restructuring and modernizing the accounting function, developing SOPs, improving processes, and strengthening accountability across the team. The ideal candidate will bring strong GAAP knowledge, leadership experience, and the ability to operate effectively in an environment where processes are still being formalized. Nonprofit, fund accounting, and grant management experience are desirable. Experience working on the SGA platform is preferred. • Strong background in accounting leadership with hands-on experience managing close activities, financial reporting, reconciliations, audit support, and internal controls.• Solid knowledge of GAAP and the ability to handle year-end adjustments and maintain accurate financial records.
• Experience preparing journal entries and financial statements, with the ability to interpret results and explain variances clearly to stakeholders.
• Proven success improving processes, documenting procedures, and bringing structure to environments where formal accounting workflows are still developing.
• Comfortable leading teams through departmental change, including motivating staff and addressing resistance in a constructive and thoughtful manner.
• Effective communication skills with the ability to partner closely with finance leadership and cross-functional department heads.
• Experience with grant accounting and fund-based reporting is highly valuable.
• Strong systems aptitude; familiarity with accounting software platforms is beneficial, though not required.
