Job Description

This Phlebotomist I role focuses on providing high-quality specimen collection and exceptional patient service in a fast-paced outpatient environment. You support daily laboratory operations by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, ensuring accurate labeling and handling, maintaining specimen integrity, and contributing to an efficient workflow. You also assist with troubleshooting, participate in training, and help identify process improvements to enhance safety, accuracy, and patient satisfaction.

Responsibilities

• Perform venipunctures and other blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high level of skill and confidence.
• Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols.
• Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes accurately and verify all information before collection.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the specific test order.
• Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the provider’s orders or scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Package specimens for transport following all required procedures to maintain specimen integrity.
• Effectively manage time to handle a high volume of daily draws while maintaining accuracy and patient care standards.

Essential Skills

• 1–2 years of recent phlebotomy experience with excellent venipuncture and blood draw skills.
• Minimum of 6 months’ work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
• Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy, venipuncture, blood draws, and specimen collection.
• Strong customer service skills with the ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients and staff.
• Ability to use computers effectively, including proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite.
• Solid time management skills to handle a high volume of daily draws and related tasks.
• Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required by state regulations.
• High school diploma or GED.
• 0–2 years of overall relevant experience in a clinical or laboratory environment.
• Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and the ability to follow safety and compliance procedures.

Work Environment

This role is based in an outpatient IOP (Independent/Institutional Outpatient) setting within a family medicine environment. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You can expect to perform approximately 30–40 blood draws per day, working with patients from a wide range of age groups, excluding pediatric patients as specified. You typically work alongside another phlebotomist, but you may work independently when staffing levels require it. Standing is primarily required while drawing patients, and the duration can vary depending on patient volume. The environment involves regular use of phlebotomy equipment such as straight needles, butterfly needles, centrifuges, and specimen transport supplies, as well as computer systems and Microsoft Office applications for documentation and communication. New team members receive approximately 1–2 weeks of training at the start of the role to ensure familiarity with procedures, workflows, and safety protocols. The setting emphasizes safety, regulatory compliance, accurate specimen handling, and professional, patient-centered service.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Abbeville, SC.

The pay range for this position is $17.50 - $17.50/hr.

This is a fully onsite position in Abbeville,SC.
