Job Summary
As the Equipment Operator, you will ultimately be responsible for operating heavy equipment, supporting underground utility construction activities, and maintaining a safe work environment. You will operate, transport, inspect, and maintain construction equipment while supporting field crews with underground utility installation projects. As the Equipment Operator, your customers are internal construction teams, project managers, and telecommunications clients, and you will make meaningful contributions to the company's success through safe equipment operation, quality workmanship, and efficient project execution.
Key Responsibilities (Including, but not limited to)
- Operate, transport, inspect, and maintain heavy equipment in accordance with company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and applicable industry standards.
- Safely perform excavation activities around existing underground utilities, install conduit, pothole utilities, assist with rigging, and complete concrete and asphalt restoration as required.
- Read and interpret construction plans, utility locate markings, and project specifications to safely execute excavation and installation activities.
- Communicate with supervisors regarding project progress, equipment status, and job requirements while supporting overtime and weekend work as business needs require.
- Additional responsibilities within functional scope based on business needs.
Required Qualifications
Education, Licensing, and Certifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Valid driver's license required.
- DOT Medical Card required.
- Active Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A strongly desired.
Experience
- Minimum one year of experience operating heavy equipment near active underground utilities.
- Experience using utility locating equipment and operating asphalt rollers, skid steers, backhoes, mini excavators, vacuum trucks, directional bore machines, or similar construction equipment.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to safely operate heavy equipment in active construction environments.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and utility locate markings.
- Knowledge of OSHA regulations, ANSI standards, safe excavation practices, and underground utility locating systems.
- Strong communication, teamwork, troubleshooting, and equipment maintenance skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience operating Ditch Witch and Vermeer equipment.
- Experience with underground telecommunications or utility construction, trench safety, shoring systems, or additional heavy equipment certifications.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, kneel, climb, push, pull, twist, and perform physically demanding work for extended periods.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and safely around heavy equipment and active construction sites while wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.
