Job Summary

Responsible for on-line supervision of inpatient technician 2s and 3s. Responsible for daily management of operations. Responsible for supervision, staff development and assessment of staff competency for technicians. Responsible for technician student training in these areas. Manages daily scheduling of technicians and duty assignments. Works with the Inpatient Assistant Chief - Acute Care Operations, Central Pharmacy Managers and Inpatient Pharmacy Supervisors to identify areas of improvement and solutions through integration of pharmacy resources. Responsible for investigation and remedy of incident reports in responsible areas. Staff consists of professional, technical and administrative support personnel. The Technician staff fills first doses and batch doses for both IV and UD meds, refills Pyxis machines, deliver medications to nursing areas, problem solves medication distribution issues with nursing staff, and performs maintenance and inventory functions. This position may require staffing during times of staffing shortages. #CA-DS

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position.

  • California Board of Pharmacy Technician License
  • Minimum education satisfied through attainment of the required licensure/certification
  • Recent inpatient pharmacy experience, including pharmacy receiving or inventory
  • Experience training or mentoring staff, serving as a technical resource, coordinating workflow, resolving operational issues, or supporting daily operations
  • Knowledge of pharmacy terminology
  • Ability to perform pharmacy calculations
  • Basic knowledge of automatic dispensing machine systems (PYXIS)
  • Decision-making skills to independently exercise delegated authority to take action, and to recognize when it is appropriate to seek assistance from others when limits of delegated authority have been reached
  • Problem-solving skills to independently recognize and define a problem, identify the resources available to help solve the problem, create and implement viable solutions, and follow through to ensure the problem is resolved to the satisfaction of all parties
  • Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain a friendly, welcoming environment for departments and customers to demonstrate an interested, understanding, compassionate manner, to maintain a courteous and calm demeanor, and to use a proactive approach to negotiate with and persuade others to take required action

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB)
  • UCD Pharmacy experience
  • Experience teaching and evaluating the performance of pharmacy technicians and students
  • Experience working with Pyxis and EPIC Systems for data retrieval, billing and problem solving
  • Experience managing and leading of multiple staff members
  • Experience with DSCSA, BD Pharmacy Logistics (PLX), and inventory receiving

The Department of Pharmacy is a dynamic, integral, and critical part of patient care provided by UC Davis Health. As a department of greater than 600 professional, technical, and administrative support personnel, we focus on providing patient-centered medication management that optimizes outcomes through practice, education, research, and leadership through the continuum of care. We also have the largest pharmacy residency program in the country with 46 total residents in 13 different programs.

The Department of Pharmacy offers comprehensive pharmaceutical services (unit dose, IV admixtures, clinical services, infusion pumps, and teaching) throughout the health system complex 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The pharmacy services encompass inpatient pharmacy services as well as an expansive footprint in the ambulatory care space where we have clinical pharmacists embedded within our clinics and specialty care locations. Our operational teams support the health system enterprise with three inpatient pharmacies, five outpatient pharmacies, two infusion pharmacies, a home infusion service line, and the full complement of pharmacy purchasing, stores, and distribution.
