THE ROLE
E Ink’s Product Development Group is looking for a Coating Engineer to join the Coating and Lamination Process development team. As a member of this team this individual will work on next generation ePaper products that support our mission of Making Surfaces Smarter and Green. This individual will be responsible for developing innovative coating and lamination solutions for E Ink’s unique materials. Working within cross-functional project teams, this individual will be responsible for planning and executing complex pilot and production-scale experiments to develop creative coating and lamination solutions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The essential duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Implement a wide range of coating application methods to support new design and materials introduction into next generation ePaper devices
- Interact across multiple groups to understand coating requirements of new materials, including fluids and coating substrate materials; develop and demonstrate process capabilities for these requirements
- Accelerate transition of coating technologies from research to development by collaborating with research engineers to resolve scale-up challenges and align early-on process feasibility
- Demonstrate fundamental relationships between process variables and device performance, with goal of using what is learned for scale-up to production scale
- Design, manage and coordinate experiments on pilot-scale roll-to-roll coating equipment
- Conduct film characterizations such as profilometry, optical, mechanical, and analytical to verify experimental formulations as they relate to electro-optical metrics and coating-related defects
- Interact with technicians, perform process troubleshooting, and issue reports
- Document and transfer processes from Development to Production environment
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS

- BS/MS/PhD in Chemical, Material Science or Mechanical Engineering, with a minimum of 3 years of industrial experience in roll-to-roll processes and coating technology
- Knowledge and experience in a wide range of coating applications such as Slot Die, Gravure, Blade, and multilayer coating techniques
- Hands-on experience with process control systems for coating or roll-to-roll manufacturing processes (e.g., PLCs, feedback control, sensor integration) highly desired
- Hands on experience in 3D modeling, tool design and fabrication
- Experience in process design, hardware testing, and equipment troubleshooting
- Familiarity with rheological and mechanical measurement techniques
- Knowledge of Design of Experiments and Statistical Analysis
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office software, JMP or other statistical analysis tools
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, a strong sense of urgency and a performance metrics-driven style
- Sound analytical skills, attention to detail, and strong problem-solving skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, willingness to learn new skills and be flexible
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
The anticipated annual base salary range for this position is $80,000- $110,000, not including variable pay. The final offer will be based on factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's experience, education, skills, qualifications, and location.
In addition to a competitive base salary, E Ink offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision insurance; life and disability coverage; paid time off; and a 401(k) retirement savings plan. Additionally, the position is eligible for our bonus program.
