About the Opportunity
Our client is a growing commercial concrete contractor known for delivering high-quality projects through disciplined execution, strong leadership, and a commitment to safety, quality, and operational excellence. As the organization continues to expand, they are seeking a skilled and experienced Lead Layout & Drafting Technician to support complex commercial, industrial, and infrastructure concrete projects.
This is a hands-on, field-based leadership role responsible for layout accuracy, field coordination, and ensuring project plans are translated effectively into production. The ideal candidate is an experienced concrete construction professional who understands concrete means and methods, sequencing, and tolerances and thrives in a fast-paced construction environment.
Position Summary
The Lead Layout & Drafting Technician will lead and execute layout operations on active jobsites while working closely with superintendents, foremen, and field crews. This position plays a critical role in maintaining project quality, minimizing rework, and ensuring construction activities remain on schedule through accurate and efficient layout execution.
Key Responsibilities
Layout Leadership & Execution
- Perform and lead concrete layout for footings, foundations, walls, columns, slabs, and elevated structures.
- Establish and verify control lines, benchmarks, and elevations.
- Layout and confirm anchor bolts, embeds, sleeves, block-outs, and edge conditions.
- Maintain layout accuracy in high-production construction environments.
- Support large concrete pours, elevated placements, and projects requiring tight tolerances.
Coordination & Field Integration
- Coordinate daily layout activities with superintendents, foremen, and field crews.
- Clearly communicate layout requirements and verify understanding before work begins.
- Identify drawing conflicts, constructability concerns, and field discrepancies early.
- Collaborate with leadership to develop solutions that prevent delays and rework.
- Serve as a technical layout resource for field personnel.
Drawings & Technical Interpretation
- Read and interpret structural, civil, and architectural drawings.
- Understand concrete tolerances, forming systems, and sequencing requirements.
- Verify layout accuracy against plans, specifications, and approved construction details.
Tools & Technology
- Operate and maintain total stations, lasers, levels, and related layout equipment.
- Ensure layout technology and tools are utilized safely and efficiently in the field.
Travel
- Travel to regional and multi-state project sites as needed.
- Provide support during project start-up, peak production periods, and critical milestones.
Qualifications
Required
- 7+ years of concrete construction layout experience.
- Strong knowledge of concrete forming systems, sequencing, and tolerances.
- Proven ability to independently lead layout operations in the field.
- Proficiency with total stations, lasers, levels, and other layout equipment.
- Ability to work effectively with field crews in active construction environments.
- Willingness to travel and work extended schedules when project demands require.
Preferred
- Experience supporting large commercial, industrial, or infrastructure concrete projects.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish.
- Strong communication and leadership skills.
- Experience mentoring junior field personnel.
- Background supporting high-production, schedule-driven concrete operations.
