Scrub Tech/RCIS-Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory

The Scrub Tech / RCIS plays a critical role in the daily operations of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory by providing direct support during diagnostic and interventional cardiovascular procedures. This individual assists the physician and Cath Lab team with sterile preparation, equipment setup, procedural monitoring, radiation safety, and patient care.

The Scrub Tech / RCIS ensures procedures are performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with all hospital, regulatory, and accreditation standards.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Procedural Support

                •              Prepares the Cath Lab suite and ensures all equipment, instruments, and sterile supplies are available and functioning properly.

                •              Scrubs in and assists the physician during diagnostic and interventional procedures, including coronary angiography, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), pacemaker/ICD implant, peripheral vascular interventions, and structural heart procedures as applicable.

                •              Manipulates and prepares guidewires, catheters, balloons, stents, and other devices during procedures under physician direction.

                •              Monitors patient status, hemodynamics, and radiation exposure during procedures.

                •              Ensures strict adherence to sterile technique and infection control standards.

2. Patient Care & Safety

                •              Assists in transferring, positioning, prepping, and draping patients before procedures.

                •              Monitors patient vital signs and communicates changes promptly to the physician and nursing staff.

                •              Provides compassionate, professional support to patients before, during, and after procedures.

                •              Ensures radiation safety for patients and staff by following ALARA principles and using protective equipment.

3. Equipment Operation & Maintenance

                •              Operates imaging, hemodynamic, and physiologic monitoring systems (e.g., GE/OEC, Siemens, Philips, or Merge Hemo).

                •              Performs equipment checks, calibration, and troubleshooting before procedures.

                •              Reports equipment malfunctions or maintenance needs immediately to the Cath Lab Director or Biomed team.

4. Documentation & Recordkeeping

                •              Accurately documents procedural data, medications, devices, and supplies in the EHR/Hemo system.

                •              Ensures proper completion of procedural logs, implants, and charge capture forms.

                •              Assists with inventory control and restocking of supplies.

5. Teamwork & Communication

                •              Collaborates effectively with physicians, nurses, technologists, and ancillary staff.

                •              Participates in pre- and post-procedure huddles and debriefings.

                •              Supports orientation and training of new staff and students.

6. Compliance & Quality

                •              Maintains current certifications and demonstrates knowledge of DOH, AHCA, and CMS regulations for Cath Lab operations.

                •              Adheres to all hospital and departmental policies, including infection control, safety, and confidentiality (HIPAA).

                •              Actively participates in performance improvement and quality assurance initiatives.

Qualifications:

Education:

                •              Graduate of an accredited Cardiovascular Technology, Surgical Technology, or Radiologic Technology program.

Licensure / Certification:

                •              Required:

                •              Current BLS and ACLS certification (AHA-approved).

                •              Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) through CCI or Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential.

                •              Preferred:

                •              Florida State license (RT or CST, as applicable).

                •              Experience in interventional or electrophysiology procedures.

Experience:

                •              Minimum of 1–2 years of Cath Lab or interventional radiology experience preferred.

                •              Strong knowledge of sterile technique, cardiovascular anatomy, and interventional procedures.

Physical & Environmental Requirements:

                •              Ability to stand for extended periods in a lead apron.

                •              Manual dexterity and visual acuity to manipulate catheters, wires, and instruments.

                •              Ability to respond calmly and effectively in high-stress or emergency situations.
