Position Summary
The School-Based Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) provides individualized therapeutic interventions that support students with mobility challenges in accessing and participating fully in their educational environment. Working under the direct supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist (PT), the PTA implements treatment plans, promotes student independence, and helps remove physical barriers that may impact learning and school participation. Responsibilities:
- Under the supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist (PT), the PTA will assist in implementing therapy plans, providing direct services, and supporting students’ mobility, strength, and functional independence in the school setting
- Assist the PT in delivering therapy services and exercises to students
- Provide direct therapy services in individual and group settings
- Collect and document student progress under PT supervision
- Collaborate with teachers, parents, and the therapy team to reinforce therapy goals in the classroom
- Prepare therapy materials and ensure a safe environment
- Maintain compliance with all federal, state, and district regulations under the direction of the PT
- Help educate staff and families on strategies to support students' physical development
- Create a safe, supportive environment to foster each child's potential
Schedule / Shift:
- Shift details: School Day Schedule
- Hours per week: 35-37.5 hours per week
- Contract length: School Year
- Regular sitting, speaking, hearing, and use of hands.
- Occasional standing, walking, reaching, stooping, and kneeling.
- Lifting up to 10 pounds.
Education
-
- Completed CAPTE-accredited PTA program, Associate’s degree or higher
- Current Michigan licensure as Physical Therapy Assistant
- Current CPR certification
Skills
- Ability to work with students with special needs.
- Ability to maintain composure under stressful conditions.
- Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community.
- May be required to work with more than one adult during the school day.
- Ability to handle and operate standard school equipment and provide clerical services as needed.
- Ability to implement teacher philosophy accurately and consistently.
- Ability to be flexible and maintain confidentiality.
- Demonstrates initiative and creativity – is self-directed.
