Job Description
We are looking for a detail-oriented Staff Accountant to join a non-profit organization in New York, New York in a contract-to-permanent capacity. This role supports grant and general accounting activities by maintaining accurate financial records, preparing reports, and helping ensure spending remains aligned with program and funding requirements. The ideal candidate brings a solid foundation in accounting principles, strong Excel skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities:
• Review grant-related budgets each month to confirm expenses and financial activity comply with funder expectations and organizational policies.
• Record and verify financial transactions with accurate account coding and timely posting to the appropriate ledgers.
• Prepare ledger detail, revenue summaries, and expense reporting to support grant reconciliation and financial review processes.
• Enter journal entries and generate invoices within accounting systems used for grant and operational reporting.
• Maintain internal spreadsheets and calculate cost recovery data using Excel-based reporting tools.
• Compile and prepare financial reports for submission to external funding sources and internal stakeholders.
• Develop cash flow projections related to service revenue to support planning and financial oversight.
• Support accounts payable and accounts receivable activities, including reviewing documentation, tracking outstanding items, and helping resolve payment-related questions.
• Reconcile items such as petty cash, credit card activity, cash receipts, and other transactional records to ensure accuracy and completeness.• 1-3 years of accounting experience in a staff accountant or closely related role.
• Working knowledge of journal entries, debits and credits, and core accounting principles.
• Familiarity with accounts payable and accounts receivable processes.
• Proficiency in Excel, including functions such as VLOOKUP, SUMIF, and PivotTables.
• Strong attention to detail with effective problem-solving and organizational skills.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a deadline-driven setting.
• Non-profit or grant accounting experience is preferred.
• Willingness to complete an Excel and accounting assessment during the interview process.
