Job Description

The ophthalmic technician supports a high-volume retina clinic by preparing patients for their visits, documenting clinical encounters in the electronic medical record (EMR), and facilitating clear communication of the physician’s care plan. This role combines direct patient interaction, detailed medical documentation, and collaboration with a multidisciplinary clinical team in a fast-paced, research-oriented environment.

Responsibilities

• Prepare patients for their clinic visits by taking vital signs, reviewing patient history, and collecting family medical history.
• Update and maintain accurate patient information in the EMR system before, during, and after each visit.
• Document physician-patient encounters in the EMR system, acting as a medical scribe to capture clinical notes, assessments, and plans.
• Perform patient work-ups following physician visits, ensuring all required tests, measurements, and follow-up steps are completed.
• Communicate the physician’s documented care plan to patients in a clear, professional, and compassionate manner.
• Provide high-volume patient care in a busy retina clinic, supporting 80–100 patient visits per day.
• Collaborate with a team of clinical staff and physicians to ensure efficient clinic flow and a positive patient experience.
• Handle medical documentation and data entry with a high level of accuracy, attention to detail, and confidentiality.
• Use medical terminology appropriately when documenting and communicating clinical information.
• Support multiple clinic locations as needed while maintaining consistent standards of patient care and documentation.
• Participate in training sessions and ongoing education to maintain and improve clinical and documentation skills.
• Contribute to a fast-paced, team-based environment by multitasking effectively and managing shifting priorities throughout the day.

Essential Skills

• Experience in medical assisting, patient care, or a related clinical support role.
• Proficiency with electronic medical record (EMR) systems and accurate medical documentation.
• Strong knowledge of medical terminology, particularly in ophthalmology and general medical care.
• Fast and accurate typing and data entry skills for real-time documentation of patient encounters.
• Ability to work effectively in a high-volume healthcare setting, supporting 80–100 patients per day.
• Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a related health science field, OR at least 1+ year of experience in the medical field.
• At least 1+ year of on-site medical scribing or closely related medical experience.
• Ability to multitask and manage multiple patients, tasks, and documentation requirements simultaneously.
• Driven, self-motivated approach to work in a demanding clinical environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Coursework in health sciences, biology, or a related discipline.
• Interest in ophthalmology and retina care, with a desire to learn specialized clinical concepts.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with patients and clinical staff.
• Comfort working in an extremely fast-paced environment with continuous patient flow.
• Organizational skills to manage schedules, documentation, and patient follow-up efficiently.

Work Environment

This role is based in a busy retina clinic environment that is considered a premier facility and participates in high-level clinical research trials. The schedule is Monday through Friday, with shifts falling between 6:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., depending on clinic needs; early starts or late finishes are rare and typically occur only when the clinic is extremely busy. Initial training takes place at an administrative building, after which the technician works within a team of 8–24 clinical staff, with each physician supported by approximately eight clinic team members. Employees are assigned to three primary clinics, with a home clinic that is one of the busiest locations and can see 100+ patients per day; they will work there most of the time while supporting the other assigned clinics as needed. Schedules are provided two weeks in advance. On rare occasions, usually for training, the technician may be asked to support a clinic outside of their three primary locations, and mileage is reimbursed for travel to any additional clinic. The environment is extremely fast-paced, with 80–100 patients seen each day, requiring sustained focus, energy, and teamwork. Dress code consists of navy blue scrubs, with short, well-groomed nails, and all hair must be tied back to maintain a professional and safe clinical appearance. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Houston, TX.

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $18.00/hr.
