Job Title: Lumber Yard Forklift and Delivery AssociateJob Description

This role supports a busy lumber yard by safely operating forklifts to load and unload building materials, preparing orders for delivery and will-calls, assisting customers, and keeping the yard and shop organized and clean. You will work both outdoors and indoors, handle a variety of lumber and construction materials, and collaborate with office, sales, and delivery teams to ensure accurate, timely service.

Responsibilities
  • Operate forklifts safely and efficiently to load and unload trucks with lumber and other building materials for delivery and pickup.
  • Pick and prepare building materials for customer will-calls and deliveries, ensuring orders are accurate, complete, and properly staged.
  • Locate building materials in the yard and shop, including items that may not be clearly labeled or perfectly organized.
  • Assist in organizing materials and improving yard layout during slower periods to support efficient operations and material flow.
  • Perform general labor tasks such as yard and shop cleanup, snow removal, and maintaining a safe, orderly work area.
  • Communicate with customers on occasion to answer basic questions, confirm orders, and provide courteous assistance.
  • Coordinate with office staff, sales staff, and delivery drivers to ensure materials are ready on time for pickup or delivery.
  • Handle materials manually as needed, including lifting, carrying, moving, and staging lumber and related products.
  • Support delivery operations by preparing loads so that materials are properly secured and ready for transport.
  • Eventually assist with running materials out to jobsites when items are left behind, using a company vehicle once driving responsibilities are assigned.
  • Use basic computer skills to support simple yard or order-related tasks, such as outlining project needs or updating order information.
  • Use power tools and other equipment as needed for yard work and material handling, following all safety procedures.
Essential Skills
  • Proven ability to operate a forklift safely in a yard or warehouse environment.
  • Experience working in a lumber yard, construction, or general labor environment involving material handling and loading.
  • Basic working knowledge of building materials to help identify, locate, and organize products.
  • Strong communication skills to interact with customers, office staff, sales staff, delivery drivers, subcontractors, and project managers.
  • Basic computer skills to outline project needs and support simple yard or order-related tasks.
  • Clean driving record (clean MVR) to qualify for future responsibilities delivering materials to jobsites.
  • Ability to perform physical work, including heavy lifting, carrying, and moving materials in an outdoor environment.
  • Ability to read and understand basic blueprints and project documentation is highly beneficial.
  • Comfort using forklifts, boom lifts, and other material-handling equipment in a safe and controlled manner.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Prior experience with picking, loading, and material handling in a yard, warehouse, or construction setting.
  • Experience with residential construction materials and finish carpentry is a strong plus.
  • Comfort working in an environment where some materials may not be perfectly labeled or organized and initiative is required to locate items.
  • Willingness to perform general yard work, including cleanup and snow removal, to maintain a safe and efficient facility.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multiple teams, including office, sales, and delivery staff.
  • Experience using power tools in a construction or yard environment.
  • Ability to manage basic blueprint information related to materials and loading requirements.
  • Reliability and strong work ethic, with a focus on safety and customer service.

Work Environment

This position is based primarily outdoors in a lumber yard, with some work performed indoors in the shop or warehouse. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Avon, MN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $26.00/hr.
