Job Title: Avionics Technician – Flightline
Job Description
This role focuses on performing comprehensive avionics and electrical system testing, troubleshooting, and inspections on aircraft at the flightline. You will support the aircraft from initial assembly through flight testing by preparing and executing ground tests, verifying and upgrading avionics software, and ensuring all systems operate safely and reliably. The position requires hands-on work on aircraft systems, close collaboration with engineering, and meticulous documentation of non-conformities and retests.
Responsibilities
- Perform aircraft systems functional tests, including flight controls, navigation, passenger entertainment, and other avionics and electrical systems throughout the assembly process and into flight testing.
- Complete pre-flight and post-flight daily inspection checklists on the flightline, ensuring all relevant systems and components are thoroughly inspected and documented.
- Conduct detailed troubleshooting on test systems and aircraft avionics systems, accurately identifying error types and distinguishing between hardware, software, and installation issues.
- Prepare the aircraft and workstation surroundings for ground tests on various avionics and electrical systems, maintaining a safe, organized, and compliant work environment.
- Set up and operate ground support and test equipment to validate system performance, including instrumentation, avionics components, and electrical systems.
- Test and troubleshoot instrumentation and components, verifying proper operation and resolving discrepancies in coordination with engineering when necessary.
- Verify and upgrade avionics software, ensuring correct configuration, version control, and successful implementation on the aircraft.
- Interpret flight test data to support diagnosis of system issues, confirm system performance, and validate corrective actions taken during troubleshooting.
- Calibrate electrical and avionics systems as required to meet performance and safety standards, following established procedures and specifications.
- Inspect cabin interiors, cockpit areas, and electrical bays for proper installation, routing, and integrity of avionics systems, wiring, and related components.
- Organize and record documentation of any non-conformities in the SAP NC system, ensuring accurate reporting and traceability of issues.
- Initiate and support associated retests by creating and following Repeat Test Instructions after completion of rework, confirming that all corrective actions are effective.
- Coordinate troubleshooting activities, including preparing test plans, clarifying issues with the engineering department, and following up on resolutions.
- Perform line maintenance and post dock maintenance tasks on avionics systems and wiring, ensuring aircraft readiness for flight operations.
- Support verification of wire harness integrity, including ringing out wires and confirming correct routing, continuity, and connections.
- Carry out systems function tests and operations checks (Ops Checks) as applicable, particularly for candidates with modification and installation backgrounds.
- Ensure all work performed on aircraft adheres to safety, quality, and regulatory standards, and contribute to timely aircraft delivery and cost-effective maintenance.
Essential Skills
- Minimum of 3 years of hands-on avionics experience working directly on aircraft; 5 or more years of experience is preferred.
- Proven experience performing troubleshooting on avionics systems, with the ability to identify, analyze, and resolve problems in complex aircraft systems.
- Demonstrated ability to ring out wires, verify continuity, and ensure correct wiring installation and routing in aircraft environments.
- Strong capability to read and interpret wiring diagrams and electrical schematics accurately for installation, troubleshooting, and repair tasks.
- Experience performing systems function tests on aircraft avionics and electrical systems, including validation of flight controls, navigation, and passenger systems.
- Experience with modification and installation work with exposure to operations checks (Ops Checks) on installed systems is highly valued.
- Hands-on experience on either fixed-wing or rotary-wing aircraft platforms; bench-only technician experience is not acceptable for this role.
- Comfort working on the flightline and performing line maintenance tasks, including pre- and post-flight inspections and functional checks.
- Knowledge of avionics installation practices, wire harness handling, aircraft inspection processes, and flightline operations.
- Ability to use ground support and test equipment to conduct system checks, calibrations, and diagnostics on avionics and electrical systems.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working with SAP or similar systems to document non-conformities, track rework, and manage repeat test instructions.
- Exposure to post dock maintenance activities and coordination with engineering teams to clarify technical issues and implement solutions.
- Familiarity with interpreting flight test data to support troubleshooting and confirm system performance.
- aircraft modification, installation, repair, or line maintenance, with detailed knowledge of platforms, systems, and tasks performed.
- Experience inspecting cabin interiors, cockpit areas, and electrical bays for proper installation, wiring integrity, and system functionality.
- Demonstrated track record of meeting performance metrics such as early delivery of aircraft, cost savings, or other measurable operational improvements.
- Ability to communicate clearly with cross-functional teams, including engineering and production, to resolve technical issues efficiently.
- Strong attention to detail and documentation skills to ensure accurate records of tests, non-conformities, and corrective actions.
