GENERAL PURPOSE:

The Adult & Youth Recreation Volleyball Official is responsible for officiating recreational volleyball games in a fair, consistent, and professional manner while promoting a positive experience for participants, coaches, and spectators. Officials enforce league rules, maintain game flow, ensure player safety, and uphold good sportsmanship during youth and adult recreation volleyball leagues. This position requires sound judgment, effective communication skills, and the ability to remain impartial in a fast-paced environment.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

  • Officiate youth and adult recreational volleyball games according to league rules and Minot Park District policies.
  • Make fair, consistent, and impartial rulings during games, including violations, substitutions, rotations, scoring, and player conduct.
  • Ensure games begin and end on schedule while maintaining an efficient pace of play.
  • Promote good sportsmanship and maintain a safe, respectful environment for participants, coaches, and spectators.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with players, coaches, scorekeepers, supervisors, and fellow officials.
  • Address rule questions and minor disputes calmly and professionally while enforcing league policies.
  • Inspect the court, nets, and equipment before games to ensure a safe playing environment.
  • Report injuries, emergencies, incidents, rule violations, or facility concerns to the supervisor immediately.
  • Assist with light setup and cleanup of volleyball equipment before and after games as needed.
  • Attend required meetings and training sessions to stay current on league rules, procedures, and expectations.
  • Represent the Minot Park District in a positive and professional manner.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience:

  • Previous volleyball playing, coaching, or officiating experience preferred but not required.
  • Training will be provided for qualified applicants.

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Basic knowledge of volleyball rules and gameplay or willingness to learn.
  • Ability to make quick, confident decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Ability to remain calm, impartial, and professional during competitive situations.
  • Dependable, punctual, and able to work independently.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during games.
  • Ability to move quickly on and around the court.
  • Ability to lift and carry light equipment such as volleyball nets, antennas, or score stands when necessary.

Schedule Requirements:

  • Flexible scheduling based on league needs.
  • Games are typically scheduled Monday through Thursday evenings, with occasional Saturday games and tournaments.
  • Officials work with the recreation supervisor to establish availability and schedules.

Other duties as assigned and performed as required.
